Golfer hits wild shot over buildings from the pavement at St Andrews

In staggering footage, a golfer hit a ball from the pavement over buildings to the 18th green of golf’s most famous venue…

Some incredible golf shots have been hit on the Old Course at St Andrews, but few have come from the pavement in another part of town.

A golfer was filmed firing a shot over buildings around the corner from the home of golf in a video that would shock even the sport’s biggest daredevils, let alone its staunchest traditionalists.

In extraordinary footage posted to social media, the man put a ball on the pavement and hit it over what looks to be the Auchterlonies of St Andrews and Fairways of St Andrews Hotel and near the front door of the Dunvegan Bar.

“Go for it,” the person holding the camera says in a video that has now had 2.3 million views on X (formerly Twitter).

After completing this risky act, the individual runs down Golf Place, a road that loops near the sport’s most famous venue, to see where the ball finished.

“That’s right at it,” the man says as he sets off towards the iconic 18th green. Footage shows his ball to the side of the green from where he struck the shot. He ran behind the green towards the R&A clubhouse to get a better view.

Coincidentally, these images appeared in the same week as the playing of the St Andrews Links Trophy. This prestigious amateur tournament has seen many of the game’s biggest names compete such as Ernie Els, Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy and Lee Westwood.

The Open Championship was last played at St Andrews in 2022 when Cameron Smith hoisted the Claret Jug. The venue will host the AIG Women’s Open in August this year.
