‘You can’t fake it!’ Faldo lays into Koepka for LIV move
Nick Faldo has blasted the golfers defecting to the LIV Golf Invitational, questioning their motivations to play on the breakaway tour.
In an epic rant delivered during the Travelers Championship, Faldo expressed his “extreme surprise” at Brooks Koepka joining Greg Norman’s venture, believing the American will find it “gets very old, very quickly.”
“[Brooks] is a wonderful example of the challenge of playing the tour,” Faldo said on CBS. “He wins four majors, he’s climbed his way up, last week he’s saying ‘get out my face, all I want to do is play golf and go win’, but somebody then hit his number, and off he goes.
“I’m really surprised at that because I know when he’s out there [at LIV Golf], it’s a boatload of cash, it’s a boatload of mandatory personal appearances. I’m sure he’s going to find that gets very old, very quickly.”
Last week, Faldo revealed he would be calling it quits on his broadcast career after 18 years to focus on other projects. Such is the state of world golf at the minute, the announcement fuelled speculation that the Englishman could be jumping ship to commentate for LIV Golf.
But having already refuted the suggestions, Faldo’s latest rant makes it crystal clear he’ll be having nothing to do with the breakaway league.
“You’ve got to enjoy what you do in life. You can’t be standing on the golf course and thinking, ‘I don’t know the reason why I’m out here.’ You just can’t fake that,” Faldo explained.
“It’s an important thing in life to know what you’re out there for, and you think, ‘I love this. I really love it.’ And I cannot see how these guys right now think it’s a serious challenge.”
Koepka will make his LIV debut at the league’s second event in Portland on June 30, joining a field of PGA Tour defectors which includes Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed.
