‘Utter disgrace!’ Golf world fumes (again) at SPOTY snub
He conquered Brookline for a second time in 2022, becoming just the eighth Englishmen to win the US Open and first since 2013, but there will be no celebratory end for Matt Fitzpatrick this year after he was snubbed on the shortlist for The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. And fans are far from happy about it.
Celebrating the British sportspeople who achieved the most this year, Fitzpatrick did not feature on the six-person shortlist despite his stunning victory in ‘golf’s toughest test’. Rory McIlroy was also not included despite having one of his best year’s to date.
Making up the nominees instead are stars from the world of athletics, cricket, curling, football gymnastics and snooker, and it’s caused quite the stir within the golf community. Here are the best reactions following Fitzpatrick’s shock omission…
Dai Rees (1957) and Sir Nick Faldo (1989) remain the only winners of the award from the world of golf. McIlroy (2014) and Darren Clarke (2006, 2011) have both finished second, while Justin Rose and Danny Willett were nominated following their major success in 2013 and 2016 respectively.
