NCG SUMMARY

I love the shape and the feel of this fairway wood. Wilson have built a great-looking fairway that is easy to use for both the off-the-tee fairway wood players and second-shot fairway wood players.

This is perfect for golfers who are looking for reasonable ball speed from their fairway wood but also would benefit from some forgiveness.

PROS

  • Classic shape
  • Ball speeds remained high on miss-hits
  • Plenty of spin to keep the ball in the air
  • Great price

First Impressions

I really enjoyed testing the Dynapwr driver, so I was looking forward to giving the fairway wood a hit. With the help of tour players, Wilson have nailed the shape of their woods this year and the Dynapwr fairway looks brilliant behind the ball.

I love the black and red throwback colour scheme and the matte crown finish and flatter profile means any player would be comfortable standing with this club behind the ball.

NCG Verdict

Fairway woods are the acid test of a golf swing in my opinion. If you’re swinging well, a well-struck fairway wood at a long par 4 or par 5 from a tight fairway lie is no problem. If the swing is off, I can’t think of a worse shot to be faced with.

The Wilson Dynapwr may just be the solution to this problem.

I tested the Wilson Dynapwr fairway wood on a terrible day for testing, cold and straight into a 25mph headwind. I also haven’t been hitting my fairway wood very well so I wasn’t overly hopeful that it was going to go well.

Following my normal loosening up process (a coffee and a few hooked 7 irons), my first shot with the Dynapwr was an absolute corker, with ball speed over 150mph. I was then even more shocked when my second and third shots were similar high draws with pretty good ball speed.

flightscope data

In the data above I’ve included the real shots that happened, and also the data using FlightScope’s ‘environmental optimizer’ settings which removes the wind effect on the shots.

I hit the 3 wood 228 yards carry with wind removed, which isn’t too bad but to be honest with over 150mph ball speed I’d have liked to have seen a bit more.

Wilson have designed the Dynapwr fairway using artificial intelligence to calculate the variable thickness in the face to provide maximum speed and spin from all strike locations. It also features a weight on the rear of the sole which drags back the centre of gravity to increase MOI.

The result of this tech is an extremely forgiving fairway wood. I made sure to hit plenty of shots from a wide variety of face locations and none of the shots were unplayable. Wilson have done a brilliant job building a fairway wood that players can actually use and rely on.

I did hit the Wilson Dynapwr fairway wood pretty high and with a lot of spin. This for most players is a good thing, but as the head isn’t adjustable I personally am not able to really customise the launch conditions and flight to something that is more optimal for me.

As a coach, I know loads of golfers that would benefit from having this fairway wood in the bag. It’s so easy to launch and keep in the air, it would be a brilliant addition to the bag of a player who does hit a number of fairway woods in their round.

If you’re a player who traditionally struggles with their fairway wood shots then be sure to give this a go when you next can!

He also loves his golf equipment and analysing the data of the latest clubs on the market using launch monitors, specialising in blade irons and low-spinning drivers despite having a chronically low ball flight.

Although Jack has no formal journalism training, He has been reading What's In The Bag articles since he started playing at 12 and studying golf swings since his dad first filmed his swing to reveal one of the worst over-the-top slice swings he reckons has ever been recorded, which set him off on the path to be a coach. His favourite club ever owned was a Ping G10 driver bought from a local top amateur with the hope that some of the quality golf shots would come with it (they didn't), and worst was a Nike SQ driver he only bought because Tiger was using it.
