NCG SUMMARY

As a wedge designed for mid-high handicappers, this one looks pretty good and doesn’t scream I need assistance around the greens.

Off of the club face, this felt really nice, and over the ball, you couldn’t really tell that there was a slightly larger sole.

If you are someone who is looking for something that is more forgiving around the greens this is a perfect option.

First Impressions

The Cobra Snakebite-X is the more forgiving version of Cobra’s Snakebite wedge. The X is tailored towards those mid-high handicappers who require a little more assistance around the greens. This has a hollow cavity-back design with a a TPU insert to keep a soft cushiony feel.

Because of this cavity, it means that there is a little more going on aesthetically than the standard Cobra Snakebite wedge but still overall a fairly simple design. I must also mention that feel wise I enjoyed the standard Lampkin 360 crossline grip that was very smooth to hold.

The club face features full-length face grooves, which I hadn’t used before, and certainly took some getting used to. I do think they are more confidence-inspiring for the majority of golfers as you feel like you have more of the club face to work with.

NCG Review

From first testing this wedge to taking out on the course I really enjoyed using it. I have always used blade wedges and have never really felt the need for anything with a chunkier sole. I think that this is a nice middle-ground option as something that has a wider sole but doesn’t feel too chunky behind the ball. Although visually it has a larger grind with the new teardrop design, it actually doesn’t look overly chunky behind the ball like you would find with some wider soled wedges.

I tested a 56-degree in this wedge and I loved how well it performed from those sat-down lies. It also worked really nicely out of fluffy soft sanded bunkers. However, like most wedges with a slightly larger sole, it struggled to navigate bunkers that were a little firmer with less sand.

I really liked how the ball popped off the Snakebite-X and the sound that it made was also very nice. This is all thanks to the TPU insert that Cobra has added into the back of the wedge, which is the black panel. This is placed behind the sweet spot to provide that cushioned feel on every shot.

The sole has been upgraded to a teardrop grind which is there to provide a little more confidence to players as it sits behind the ball. This is designed to be a versatile grind so you can hit a variety of different shots with this wedge. I found this worked for standard shots, and when I shut the face down but wasn’t always the easiest to use with a open face due to the thicker sole.

The Snakebite-X features some impressive features. The CNC Milled Snakebite grooves are now 11% deeper and have 40% sharper edges. Out on the course, this was certainly noticed on chip shots as there was a nice amount of spin created.

The Snakebite-X now features 50% more in wet conditions than the previous generation. I haven’t tested the previous model, but I didn’t see much variation in spin between dry and wet conditions.

Overall, I think that although this is tailored to mid-high handicappers I would not feel ashamed to have this in my bag. It feels great off of the face, and for the money, you really can’t beat it.
