Ping Verity shorts review: First impressions

I’ve had these shorts sat in my wardrobe for a couple of months now as I have waited for a warm enough climate to get them out. Thankfully, the sunny days are now upon us, and it was time to put the Ping Verity shorts to the test.

Out of the packet, you could almost instantly tell with the feeling of the material that these were going to be super stretchy. They are made from 90% Polyamide and 10% Elastane. This also allows them to be very lightweight, which is certainly required on those hot days out on the course.

As you can see, I tested the black pair. Ping also offers these shorts in navy, and then if you’re after a bit more colour they have just added on a ‘cool lilac’ option, which looks great. The design of the shorts is relatively plain, being a block pattern. Each of the back pockets has two studs, one on either side and then the front pockets have one stud. Ping has added a small logoed metal tag on the front as well as a Ping-labelled button. There is also a handy spare button located on the inside.

Ping Verity shorts review: On-course testing

The length of these shorts will be a little like Marmite, a love-it-or-hate-it situation. Personally, as a 5ft8 female, a slightly longer pair of shorts works well and doesn’t just show that I’m all legs – if that makes sense!

They sit a couple of inches above my knee and which is a nice modest length. I wore this pair in a UK10 which is my regular size in bottoms and much like the Ping trousers I also tested they fit perfectly around my waist. Although visually, they sit tight to the leg, the stretchy material meant that they didn’t at all feel tight. Ping offers the Verity shorts in UK sizes 6-20 and lists that the inside leg measurement is 23cm.

I first tested these on a red-hot Sunday afternoon. I wasn’t sure if black shorts was my best plan of action, but as previously mentioned the Verity shorts use Ping’s SensorCool fabric, and I never felt over-hot in them.

I also found them to be incredibly stretchy, providing an excellent range and freedom of movement. When I bent down the line, my ball up on a green I never once worried or thought about my shorts as they moved with me and didn’t need adjusting after, unlike some bottoms that I own.

These shorts are incredibly practical, offering two pockets at the front and two on the back. All of the pockets are a reasonable depth, and none of my tees or other goods fell out when bending down, swinging, or moving in general.

The Ping Verity shorts practically continues with the zip and simple one-button fasten. There was no messing around getting these on and off which was great. If you do want to add a belt there are also belt loops which are suitably sized.

Having worn and washed these shorts a couple of times I can confidently say that they are very quick drying. They also dried almost perfectly crease-free after being dried outside on the washing line.

Ping Verity shorts review: The 19th hole

As I mentioned previously, these shorts might not be to everyone’s taste but I really enjoyed them and will definitely be reaching for them throughout the summer months. I’m often someone to wear cycling shorts casually, and these are very much a smarter version of those so who knows, they might get some wear off of the course at some point…?
