Penguin golf shorts review

Ready to smart up on the golf course before the summer? These Penguin golf shorts might just be the answer, writes Matt Chivers

The Penguin Beach Club Printed golf shorts proved to be a pleasant surprise after some early doubt, so let’s dive in and see how they performed on the golf course.

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The Penguin Beach Club Printed golf shorts were soft, stretchy, and a pleasant surprise. The design is unique and stands out on the golf course and these shorts also have off-course versatility.

PROS

  • The Stretch Fabric of these Penguin golf shorts was soft and extremely comfortable.
  • The shorts were true to fit and the Covered Elastic Waistband was a big part of this.
  • Off-course versatility is a big positive as these shorts wouldn’t look out of place in social summer settings.

CONS

  • Some golfers might not take to the design of these Penguin shorts.

Penguin golf shorts review: First Impressions

When I unleashed these golf shorts from the packet, I was sceptical about the Beach Club Printed colour scheme. I rarely wear golf shorts in general, so this was a rocky start.

But the colour scheme is different and unique – you can’t knock Penguin for producing a design that makes you stand out from the crowd.

The feel of the fabric is something I haven’t felt before in golf clothing. It was incredibly soft and they didn’t feel like sportswear, but loungewear, which I enjoyed.

We all want to feel comfortable and relaxed on the golf course and the feel of these Penguin golf shorts was great even before I slipped them on.

I was apprehensive about squeezing into a 34-waist (as you can probably imagine), but the Covered Elastic Waistband with a design using both button and string ties was very accommodating.

When I first put them on, I felt good. It was almost as if I had swimming trunks on, which again, makes you feel comfortable on the golf course – like sitting by the pool.

The actual Beach Club Printed pattern isn’t completely clear with the Black Iris colour, but it is certainly an individualistic design.

Penguin golf shorts review: On The Course

I don’t usually push the boundaries with what I wear on the golf course – I am more of a librarian than perhaps a John Daly.

So, I was slightly nervous when stepping on to the course with such an extravagantly designed pair of shorts on – but they grew on me.

As rain spitted down at various points, the colour scheme was dark enough and soft enough to absorb and disguise any blots made on the fabric.

I previously mentioned my concern with squeezing into a size too small – but it was fine. I could swing freely, I felt loose and this could provide guidance as to what size you should go for when you shop at Penguin.

These shorts are made with moisture-wicking technology with two useful back pockets for storage.

The Covered Elastic Waistband and Anti-Slip Interior Silicone Gripper helped them keep stable throughout my walk on the course.

Clothing is important to help you settle into your swing and feel confident and, despite some initial doubts, these Penguin shorts delivered.

Perhaps Penguin has provided a gateway for me to wear golf shorts this summer. One thing is for sure, the Beach Club Printed shorts will be my first call.

Penguin golf shorts review: The 19th hole

If you are playing golf on holiday and going out for food in the evening afterwards, I’d say keep these shorts on – they are appropriate for social settings and summer weather.

In my opinion, the Beach Club Printed pattern suits leisure settings and days out off the golf course – and when you slip them on – you’ll realise this too.

The soft fabric makes these shorts suitable for wearing around your home too, and for me, the versatility of these shorts increases their value for money.
