NCG SUMMARY

If you’re after jazzing up your golf wardrobe then this could be the mid-layer for you. The Houndstooth print is very much trending in the golf world and this one is a great addition.

The Houndstooth Mid-Layer from FootJoy is lightweight and stretchy, providing a great range of movement in the swing. However, as a full zip jacket, it doesn’t have any pockets.

PROS

  • Great pattern without bold colours
  • Quick drying
  • Crease resistant

First impressions

Aesthetically, I love the look of this mid-layer. The 360-degree houndstooth pattern with panelling at the top and bottom looks very smart. FootJoy’s logo is in the standard placement at the top of the back.

I’m not too often drawn to patterns, yet this monochrome houndstooth design offers something that looks great without using bold colours. I like the fact it is in black and white so you can pair it with a more subtle pair of trousers or a skort. If you’re after something with a little more colour, FootJoy also offers this in navy and pink colourway.

FootJoy Houndstooth Mid-Layer review

The material of the mid-layer is FootJoy’s stretch jersey twill fabric, a blend of 88% polyester and 12% spandex. It is lightweight and flexible with plenty of elasticity. The sleeves also have added thumb holes on the ends. Being a full zip jacket, the only thing I feel like FootJoy has missed is some pockets.

On course testing

I’ve worn this a good few times out on the course now, one occasion being a 36-hole competition. In the morning round, I found myself needing a gilet over the top to add a little extra warmth, as this mid-layer is quite thin. The material is a stretchy jersey type which is great for a little coverage but doesn’t provide a great deal of warmth. This is obviously a spring-summer jacket, though and I have found it perfect for those warmer days when you just want a thin mid-layer over your polo. I must also mention that this means it dries very quickly and is crease-resistant, so you can store it in your bag worry-free.

The FootJoy Houndstooth Mid-Layer was very easy to swing in. It’s very lightweight and the material stretches as you swing rather than being tight and restrictive. This brings me to sizing, I wore my regular UK12 in this which in FootJoy’s sizing is a Medium. This was the perfect fit for me. It’s a shame that FootJoy only offers this in an XS-XL (UK 8-18).

FootJoy Houndstooth Mid-Layer review

Out on the course, I often felt myself looking for pockets on this mid-layer. I know it’s not a standard feature of all mid-layers, but as a full zip jacket I felt like this was missing. Nonetheless, I still very much enjoyed wearing out on the fairways.

The 19th hole

I really enjoyed wearing this out on the course, but I can’t say I would take to the streets wearing it. If the design was a little less in your face, it would be an ideal multi-purpose piece for me.

If you’re after jazzing up your golf wardrobe then this could be the mid-layer for you. The Houndstooth print is very much trending in the golf world and this one is a great addition.
