The greenkeepers have been out and mowed down the grass around the greens away from the hole. On the face of it, it doesn’t sound like much, but this can give even the best chippers a headache. Here’s my short game tips for how to chip into the grain…

Chipping into the grain: The main points

I find that some techniques match up nicely to this shot while others don’t. Because the grass is growing into you, it’s easier to contact the ground before the ball as the grass can pull the leading edge down, resulting in those horrible duffs we all dread.

So how can you ensure you’re prepared next time you’re faced with this on the course?

What I encourage people to do is to go to both ends of the spectrum. Practise hitting the really low one and then experiment with the aerial route. From there, you’ll be able to find and develop the method that works best for you.
