Tommy Fleetwood Golf Swing Analysis: Set-Up
Fleetwood has an address positon that can be used in instruction textbooks worldwide. He is perfectly balanced in the middle of his feet, has a nice amount of spine tilt away from the target, and keeps a relaxed thoracic spine, which keeps him loose.
The ball position is just inside the left foot, and he takes a fairly wide stance, which gives him a slightly biased set-up. Amateur golfers could do a lot worse than copy this position.
Backswing
Fleetwood completes the first phase of his backswing keeping the club head and his arms very wide, and getting the club head a long way from the golf ball. This is a great feel for players who want a more shallow swing plane and approach angle into the ball.
He stands the shaft up a little steep at the top to allow the club to shallow when he makes his patented downswing move.
It’s really important to note how well Fleetwood winds back without any lateral movement with his head or hips. He creates a load of torque in his right leg and hip, which he springboards off in the downswing, but because he has stayed so centred, it guarantees great ball striking.
Downswing
This is where we see the real beauty in Tommy Fleetwood’s golf swing.
He starts down with a lateral shift to his left side and begins shallowing the club by dropping his right shoulder. Fleetwood shallows the golf club early in his downswing without much upper body rotation so that he can have all of his rotation nearer impact, which gives him club face stability.
He has an enormous amount of left leg extension through this part of the swing and holds nothing back as he swings into the golf ball.
Into The Finish
Fleetwood fully releases his right wrist after the ball is long gone in an effort to keep the club face square and stop the ball going left.
Impressively he manages to decelerate all of these speed factors to finish in a wonderfully balanced finish position, which again could be used in instruction textbooks.
What can we learn?
There are so many great things in this golf swing it is hard to put them down into one short article, but here I’ll try boil it down to a few points.
- (sick of saying this) GET YOUR SET UP CORRECT
- Centred pivot in the backswing
- Keep the clubhead wide
- Shift then shallow
- Turn hard through the shot

Jack Backhouse
Jack is a PGA Golf Professional who specialises in coaching, teaching golf to beginners and top-level amateurs for 10+ years. He also loves his golf equipment and analysing the data of the latest clubs on the market using launch monitors, specialising in blade irons and low-spinning drivers despite having a chronically low ball flight.
Although Jack has no formal journalism training, He has been reading What's In The Bag articles since he started playing at 12 and studying golf swings since his dad first filmed his swing to reveal one of the worst over-the-top slice swings he reckons has ever been recorded, which set him off on the path to be a coach. His favourite club ever owned was a Ping G10 driver bought from a local top amateur with the hope that some of the quality golf shots would come with it (they didn't), and worst was a Nike SQ driver he only bought because Tiger was using it.
Jack is a member of Sand Moor Golf Club and regularly gets out on the golf course to prepare for tournaments. Jack uses a TaylorMade BRNR Mini driver, a half set of TaylorMade P7MB irons, MG4 wedges and a TaylorMade TP Reserve putter.
