The TearDrop brand may not be the first name you think of when it comes to putters. But what the brand perhaps lacks in notoriety they make up for with the long history. Now, the brand is back with the TD-5, a mallet-style putter that combines classic design with innovative features. With its competitive price the putter aims to deliver top quality performance. But is it a good option for you mallet putter lovers out there? We took onto the golf course to find out.

NCG SUMMARY

The TearDrop TD-5 putter is a refreshing addition to the putter market. I thought its forgiving design, standout alignment system, and solid feel made it a brilliant option for golfers seeking quality performance without a hefty price tag.

With its Roll Face technology and MOI-boosted weighting, this is a putter that really delivers. I think this is certainly one to look out for as more people become familiar with it.

TearDrop TD-5 Putter Review: First Impressions

Behind the ball

At first glance, the TearDrop TD-5 boasts a sleek mallet-style design with clean lines and a solid black finish accented by crisp white alignment lines. It’s clear that TearDrop has prioritized simplicity and functionality. The club sets up beautifully behind the ball, with its Leading Edge Alignment System immediately standing out for its clarity and ease of use.

Compared to bigger brands

Though not a household name, the putter’s build quality and thoughtful design suggest it’s more than capable of holding its own against bigger brands.

NCG Verdict

Short and long putts

On the greens, I found the TD-5 excelled in both short and long-range putting. The heavy sole and Roll Face technology contributed to a smooth roll even when my contact wasn’t perfect. The putter’s alignment system made short putts feel almost automatic, which I was a big fan of.

When faced with longer attempts, the sound and feel was equally satisfying. It was solid without being harsh, providing feedback without excessive vibration.

Premium feel

The choice of 1020 carbon steel for the head and aluminium for the sole plate adds to the premium feel, with fine milling on the face further enhancing roll consistency. I thought the option to customise the shaft length between 31 and 36 inches and select from various Super Stroke or Lamkin grips also adds a personal touch that many putters in this price range don’t offer.

Final Verdict

A mallet we will see more of on the greens?

Overall, I think the TearDrop TD-5 is a more than solid option for golfers who are after an accomplished putter without the premium price tag. Its classic mallet design paired with modern innovations like the Roll Face and leading-edge alignment make it a standout in its category.

Despite being a relatively unknown name to many, TearDrop’s TD-5 delivers fantastic alignment support and golf ball roll consistency. Expect to see more of these on the greens as word gets out, this is a comeback worth watching.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
