Ping are back for 2026 with an updated version of their popular G series iron. There has been quite a few tech alternations since the previous G440 irons so what are they and how do they perform? Nicola Slater put them to the test and reveals all in her full Ping G740 irons review….

NCG SUMMARY
These are a set of super game improvement irons and so the larger head profile and chunkier sole is absolutely what you expect to see. This years model has a 7% longer blade length so visually over the ball this is very appealing. A 22% wider sole has also been added to help with weighting in the head – to improve launch on lower clubface strikes.
A new cavity at the back is designed to improve the feel at impact. The wider sole does make it harder to get a feel of strike location at times but it certainly helps to deliver a higher launching ball flight.

First Impressions
Ping has made some big changes with design of this years G series iron. The G440 model was a much more compact head with a thinner topline – this year Ping has gone bigger. There’s a 3% longer blade length, a thicker topline, shallower face with a shorter hostel and most obviously a 22% wider sole.
The G740 looks chunky and built as a true super game improvement iron – aimed at those higher handicappers/beginner golfers who are looking for visual support as much as they are technical.
The sole thickness was more obvious throughout the set, with the 5 iron setting a lot of sole at address.
How I undertook the review
To assess the performance of the Ping G740 irons, I conducted on-course testing over several rounds, focusing on various irons from the set. Additionally, I gathered data indoors using a GC3 launch monitor to analyze metrics such as carry distance and peak height. This combination of real world play and precise data collection allowed me to evaluate the clubs’ performance comprehensively, especially in terms of launch, feel, and accuracy.
What I found
I’m a player who uses a players style iron, so a smaller head profile and a relatively thin sole but iron play is by far the weakest part of my game. The G740s are a super game improvement iron or in simple terms, a style of iron designed to help you as much as possible. With that said, I was interested to see how they performed. As mentioned above I tested these out on the course over a couple of rounds as well as at indoor studio to gather data using a GC3 launch monitor.

Wedge data
Starting with a wedge, I did very much enjoy the feel off the face. This is a club designed to go in the air anyway but it seemed so easy to get a higher flight. Interestingly Ping offers these irons in three different sets of lofts, standard, power and retro. I have these in their standard loft but they are all slightly stronger than I’m used to by a couple of degrees. In terms of data, the PW the numbers were consistent.Â
8 iron data
With 8 iron I really started to see the G740 perform. A strong carry number as well as an impressive peak height. I did find especially on the grass that the wider sole sometimes masked the strike location – a few times I was unsure on how good or bad the contact was. I think this is the only downside to game improvement irons as it sometimes doesn’t help players improve their ball striking as it removes the awareness.Â
6 iron data
With 6 iron at address you could really see the back of the club. The larger profile seemed like a dream for a golfer who lacks iron confidence. Again, the carry was further than I expected, as was the total. This is something to bare in mind especially when trying to find them in amongst clubs you already have, not all 6 irons have the same loft (or any club for that matter).
NCG Final Say
Overall, I did enjoy the easy of these clubs. They promoted a higher launch effortlessly. The new purflex cavity worked great promoting a nice sound at impact. Ultimately, they’re a great option for any high handicap golfer or a beginner looking for some help with their iron play.
How they compare to other irons
Compared to the Callaway Quantum irons these irons are a lot chunkier with a larger head profile – less feedback through impact.
Stronger lofts, meaning they do go further than other game improvement irons that I’ve tested in 2026.
