PXG have been trending in the driver category over the last few years, growing in popularity with club golfers and on tour. This year is set to be their biggest yet with the launch of the brand-new Black Ops range.

The range is already in the bag of Major Champion Celine Boutier and has helped Eric Cole lock up PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. So how does it perform?

NCG SUMMARY

This is another great driver from PXG, which finds a great balance between speed and forgiveness.

For golfers who need more height, this is a perfect option as it provides incredible high launch.

In my fitting, I was hitting repeatable high draws, which is always nice to see! This is another great driver from PXG.

PXG Black Ops Driver Review: First Impressions

After years of matte crowns, PXG has taken the plunge and gone gloss for 2024, and I love how this looks behind the golf ball; something about that gloss finish feels more traditional to me, and I really like it. The front bar frames the face really well and helps with alignment.

NCG Verdict

I headed down to PXG’s new London store to get fitted for the Black Ops driver, I was really interested to see the upgrades as I got on really well with the previous PXG 0311 Gen 6 Driver.

PXG know how to do a fitting, and it was really interesting to start with the shaft I had previously been gaming and then work into the best shaft for this club head.

Since my last fitting, I have changed my swing quite a lot, so there were a few variables that need to change. I gained over 10 yards by changing to a different shaft set-up! This really shows you that you shouldn’t be buying off the rack and should always be getting fit before investing in new product.

The Black Ops Driver head comes with three sole weights that are interchangeable. At default, there is one heavier 12.5-gram weight and two lighter 2.5-gram weights. These are interchangeable to create different spin and shot shape biases. It was really interesting to see how much changing these could affect the ball flight. At one point, it changed my shot shape by 20 yards! If you want a driver you can really dial into your game, this is a perfect option.

PXG Black Ops Driver Review

During PXG’s research and development, they spent a lot of time looking at the connection between launch and distance. It is amazing how high this driver launches yet still keeps a low spin and good carry distances. For the majority of golfers hitting the ball higher is going to give you more hang time and lead to more carry distance so I wouldn’t be surprised if a huge amount of golfers see carry distances gains with this club.

Once I got my final set-up, the dispersion, shot shape and launch were really consistent, making this driver super fun to hit. So far, I have been really impressed with the performance, and I can’t wait to get it out on the golf course and see if the top-level performance continues.
