NCG SUMMARY

This is the budget-friendly version of Vice’s Pro Air golf ball and it is distance-optimised. Although this golf ball may not be a high performing option it is still a great go-to for those who may just be starting out in their golf journey.

Golfers with all types of swing speeds can benefit and use the Vice Drive golf ball. It has a firmer feel than the Pro Air but is extremely durable due to the Surlyn outer layer.

PROS

  • Fantastic entry level golf ball
  • Extremely durable
  • Amazing value-for-money

CONS

  • Not a high performing golf ball

Vice Drive Golf Ball Review: First Impressions

Equipped with an alignment aid down the side of the balls to help you knock off a few strokes from your score. Vice claim that this optimal alignment is designed with crisp edges that taper towards the target for better aim when lining up a shot and putt. Let’s see how it performs…..

NCG Verdict

As the price may suggest, £19.99 for a dozen, this holds the least amount of technology in any golf ball range they manufacturer. In more premium priced golf balls you’d tend to find a three-layer construction but the Vice Drive only consist of two.

The Vice Drive golf balls are also constructed to have a firm outside layer from Surlyn. This allows it to be extremely durable and cut-resistant. A Surlyn cover is often used in the best value-for-money golf balls on the market currently.

Vice Drive golf ball review

You can really feel this firm outer layer when putting on the greens. There is no doubt it feels hard as it comes off the putter face. Although, I do think this is something that golfers can get accustomed to after a few rounds and if you tend to use a more budget friendly ball regularly it will be absolutely adequate.

In terms of the sound, the ball makes quite the high pitched ‘clicking’ sound off the putter face. This is something that I generally don’t prefer from my golf ball as it is massively different from that of a tour ball. However, once again with considering its price point it’s hardly a massive concern.

Another bit of technology included in the crafting of the Vice Drive golf balls is a compression rating of 95. This means it should suit all types of swing speeds, increasing the distance for all golfers.

The wedge performance was fairly predictable. Given its wide availability for a variety of golfers it produced a high ball flight with low spin. Unfortunately this is the complete opposite of what a golfer should be looking to produce around the greens.

As you can see in the data, the ball launched at 35° and an average spin rate of 4800rpm. That is a pretty low spin rate, but if you are looking for that extra bit of distance then it’s going to work with rather than against you. I had no issues using the ball around the green, it felt fine upon impact, it just popped up a little bit off the face.

Vice Drive golf ball review

Moving onto longer irons. It was a fairly mixed experience with the 7-iron. I was able to produce some strikes that performed well with carry yardages in the region of 167 yards, which was very good. But, equally there were some lesser ones with distances down into the high 150s whilst the spin rate was also low again just about sneaking into the 5000rpm zone.

That spin rate is particularly flat even for a distance ball. The balls speeds were also considerably inconsistent, which is understandable considering it is only a 2-piece golf ball. This is a construction that is often used in range golf balls, so the fact it was going 165 yards and 100ft in the air at times was quite a good return.

Vice Drive golf ball review

It was pretty much the same story when it came to performance off the tee with the driver. The spin was on the low side again but nothing that wasn’t useable. Additionally, the distance was also very decent as I was able to average a 274 yard carry. The launch condition were fairly standard and even a bit better that I thought they’d be.

Overall, the Vice Drive golf ball is an excellent option for a beginner level golfer, for those with slower swing speeds or someone who casually plays. If you’re someone who can be a it wayward when it comes to their accuracy then these could be a good option considering their price point.

This is an entry level golf ball and I think a pretty good one at that. You can bounce it off trees, hit it out the bunkers and it’ll be fine to use on the next hole. You won’t have to break the bank to afford it and Vice golf offer them in a range of colours so you can stand out on the golf course.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
