In the market for some warm winter clothing? Ben Outhwaite puts OceanTee’s Slim Fit Manta mid-layer through its paces on a chilly autumnal day

Ocean Tee Men's Slim Fit Manta mid-layer review

Ocean Tee is a sustainable golf brand. They are best known for being committed to manufacturing top-quality golf clothing that is environmentally and socially responsible. So how does the Slim Fit Manta mid-layer perform?

Ocean Tee Men's Slim Fit Manta mid-layer review

The Slim Fit Manta Mid-Layer provides all-year round premium performance and comfort in a humble package. The Merino wool is its key feature, offering the wearer warmth in winter whilst keeping them cool in summer.

Its diverse range of colour choices justifies its versatility both on and off the course, so I will be using this quite often during the cold winter months.

PROS

  • Merino wool is remarkable
  • Naturally thermo-regulating
  • Beautifully soft feel

CONS

  • Lack of pockets

OceanTee Men’s Slim Fit Manta mid-layer review: First Impressions

The Manta mid-layer has three bright, vivid colour schemes to choose from and it’s soft, soft soft! I got my hands on the blue version, but there’s also grey and red to choose from, and all look just as striking as each other.

The blue version is predominantly midnight blue but also has neon green detailing around the zips. The Merino wool structure provides warmth for the wearer, whilst not being too heavy at the same time.

Merino wool is a natural fibre that is thinner and softer than regular wool, making it easy to wear next to the skin.

There’s OceanTee branding on the left sleeve, but it’s hardly noticeable, certainly in the colour I reviewed as it is in black writing. There’s also some more on the collar, but I like to fold my collar down to give my head maximum freedom of movement during my swing.

OceanTee Men’s Slim Fit Manta mid-layer review: On The Course

I am 5ft 10, and wear a UK size small top. The small size fitted me very nicely. The thing I instantly liked about this top was how lightweight and warm the Merino wool felt, making this ideal for autumnal days out on the course. Merino wool is made by Merino sheep on farms across Australia using sustainable farming practices, so it fits in with OceanTee’s ethos.

Expect to experience the warm, comforting feeling you’d get from a standard jumper but with a more lightweight feel, so it’s perfect for golfers. If you’re prone to sweating, the mid-layer is temperature regulating, quick drying and anti-odour and water resistant. It’s got it all!

I found this mid-layer really easy to swing in and the stretch of the fabric meant my swing wasn’t restricted at all. Additionally, if you’re wanting to wear a base layer underneath then you don’t need to worry about it becoming too snug. The only issue I encountered was there are no pockets in this top. I find pockets to be an essential part of a piece of apparel like this as I would often wear it with nothing on top, so I’d have nowhere to store my balls, tees and so on.

The zip is super easy to adjust, so if the sun does decide to come out you can lower it. One thing I did notice was that the mid-layer retained heat really well, as I had to throw on a waterproof jacket at one point during testing, and when I took it off it felt really cosy and warm inside.

The main purpose of a mid-layer is to sit in between a base layer and an outer layer, but I can see why a lot of people choose to treat these tops as genuine outer layers, like a fleece, which I did during most of my time testing it.

Ocean Tee Men’s Slim Fit Manta mid-layer review: The 19th hole

This could definitely be used away from the golf course too. If you’re into running or any physically demanding sports, its thermo-regulating properties will keep you cool in summer and warm during winter. Moreover, its water-resistant capabilities will also come in useful for the times when you might forget to pack a waterproof jacket.
