The TaylorMade TP Black Balboa putter review took me back to the golden age of golf aesthetics. It also possesses some of the brands most modern technologies. With its heritage-inspired shape and a range of premium design touches, the Balboa is both a looker and a performer, suited to players who demand finesse and flair on the greens. Here’s how we found it…

NCG SUMMARY

A classy throwback with cutting-edge internals, the TaylorMade TP Black Balboa blends traditional blade styling with modern performance. It’s the kind of putter that earns respect for its looks, then keeps its place in the bag because of how it performs. If you’ve got an arc stroke and a love for timeless gear that’s quietly packed with technology, this one’s hard to beat.

TaylorMade TP Black Balboa Putter Review: First Impressions

First impressions matter, and TaylorMade clearly understands that. The TP Black Balboa arrives with a premium headcover that echoes the all-black aesthetic of the putter itself, understated, stealthy, and oozing class. I especially like the matte black head, white alignment line, and contrasting TP branding which offer a clean look that avoids any unnecessary distractions.

TaylorMade TP Black Balboa Putter review

The putter’s anodised finish is not just about style. It’s functional too as this durable coating reduces glare at address, making it easier to stay focused on your line without being thrown off by sunlight bouncing off the head. It’s a subtle, yet highly effective addition that speaks to TaylorMade’s attention to detail.

NCG Verdict

This isn’t just a pretty putter though, the Balboa delivers where it counts. It’s the most toe-hang biased model in the TP Black range, making it ideal for players with a strong arc in their putting stroke. The classic blade shape, reminiscent of models once used by legends like Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson, demands some skill but rewards it generously.

TaylorMade TP Black Balboa Putter review

In testing, the putter impressed with its feel and flow, especially on longer putts. The balance and weighting lend themselves beautifully to lag putting. I felt the putter seems to swing itself, making the stroke feel natural and repeatable.

For short-range putts, I found the long alignment line helps dial in accuracy, ensuring confidence over those must-make testers.

TaylorMade TP Black Balboa Putter review

The grip is high quality, as you’d expect from a top-end TaylorMade product. To me it offers excellent traction and comfort, complementing the overall balance of the putter.

But perhaps the most compelling feature of the TP Black Balboa is its price. It offers serious value for money. Getting tour-grade tech and premium build quality in this price bracket is rare and, in my opinion, makes the Balboa stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Final Verdict

Overall, I think the TaylorMade has absolutely delivered with the TP Black Balboa. It’s a putter that blends heritage design with cutting-edge technology in a package that feels both premium and accessible. Whether you’re a blade purist, a fan of tour-proven innovation, or someone simply looking to sharpen their feel and control on the greens, the Balboa deserves a place in your bag.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
