Benross BR-Pro Irons Review: First Impressions

I was initially sceptical of how well I would receive these irons having never owned such a small set of irons before. But, that scepticism quickly weaned once I got my hands on the Benross BR-Pro irons.

As a mid-handicapper I have always been innately wary of players’ irons, partially because of their more compact club face. I have always liked to have a bit more depth to the look of my club face behind the ball. That wasn’t an issue here. I thought they looked really nice in the bag, out the bag and at address.

These clubs are of course catered to a lower handicapper, so they will most likely be familiar with a more compact blade. The club face does look a lot more compact than more forgiving, game improvement irons, which can be a bit intimating if you are just starting out in golf.

At address, the irons are particularly friendly looking, especially when standing over and hitting a shot.

NCG Verdict

Although these irons were designed for a lower handicapper, as someone who plays off 14, I found these irons to be fairly comfortable to hit. Despite my lack of experience with more compact irons, these held up well in terms of performance.

I collected the data at Scarcroft Golf Club using the Rapsodo MLM 2 pro launch monitor, some TaylorMade TP5 golf balls and the Benross BR-PRO pitching wedge, eight iron, six iron, and 4 iron.

Initially, what stood out to me the most was the feel of the clubs. I like how they came of the club face, and felt that there were some good shot capabilities from the irons.

Benross say that because these irons have a more compact players’ profile, and shaped to appeal to better players, this enables better shot-shaping capabilities. This level of workability is ideal for being able to attack different courses and hit a variety of shots.

Data Analysis

Something that stood out from the performance data was the level of ball speed I was able to attain. The average was speed was very consistent for me throughout the bag.

In terms of distance, I was surprised with how far I was able to hit the irons. For someone who is a mid-handicapper, to have consistent and good length on my carry yardage was promising. Considering the price difference between other irons I have hit and the fact I have rarely used bladed irons, the distance performance was great.

According to Benross, the high-strength C455 stainless steel face provides more flexing at impact for improved ball speed, which ultimately allows the ball to go further.

Feel is of course hugely important. A big plus, for me, was that I felt comfortable swinging the club at a fair pace and could make good contact. That’s something that I want and value as an average golfer, whose swing is often inconsistent.

Benross attributes the feel of the clubs to the soft 1020 carbon steel used. I have to say, the ball felt great coming off that forged head when I hit it pure.

Due to their target audience, these irons aren’t designed to be the most forgiving in their line-up, but I was surprised by how consistent I was with them. I did lose some distance on misstrikes and my dispersion was a tad wider than it would be with my game improvement clubs, but that is to be expected. The gains you are getting instead are in terms of look, feel and workability.

Final Thoughts

The Benross BR-Pro irons are a great, more affordable option for a low to mid-handicap golfer. They look great, have a nice feel to them, and have good performance capabilities.

At such an affordable price they are a great addition to the market. Overall, I was impressed by these players’ irons from Benross.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
