How does the Srixon Z Star Diamond Perform? Find out Hannah Screen’s thoughts as she puts it to the test…

Srixon Z Star Diamond

The Srixon Z-Star Diamond was released in early 2021 adding to the already popular Srixon Z-Star range. But this ball really started to turn some heads when four-time major winner Brooks Koepka made the switch to the Z-Star Diamond. I tested it out to see what makes this a tour-worthy ball.

NCG SUMMARY

The Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball is a tour standard golf ball with lots of spin and mid penetrating flight. With good stability in the wind, high ball speed, as well as stopping power, no wonder some of the worlds best players use it.

PROS

  • Stopping power even with mid-long irons
  • Fast ball speed and mid range flight

CONS

  • Designed for people with 90+ mph swing speed
  • Harder feel and sound than other golf balls

Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball review: First Impressions

The Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball is Srixon’s latest addition to the popular Z-Star range.

Initially when I saw that this ball is for “high speed players”, meaning players that swing over 90mph I thought that was quite a niche area. However, there is a market out there for high level pro and amateur players as well as powerful club members.

The Srixon Z-Star Diamond is only available in white with a simple logo on the side including a small diamond. I thought this made sense as the majority of people able to hit this ball wouldn’t typically use a different colourway and want to mark their golf ball up how they prefer.

Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball review: NGC Verdict

To test the Srixon Z-Star Diamond, I hit some shots on Trackman and took it out on the golf course to try it in all conditions.

To give some context I swing around 94 mph with my driver so this golf ball should be in my reach in terms of getting the maximum performance. I didn’t see any distance drop off with a driver and loved the mid-launch, strong flight I had into the wind. Similarly, when hitting wedges I didn’t notice any change in carry or total distance but the results with my 7 iron were interesting.

I lost a lot of distance when hitting a 7-iron on Trackman, almost 10 yards! Although my swing speed is similar to the LPGA Tour average, I still wasn’t compressing the ball enough to get it to its optimum performance with a mid-iron. This may be because the Srixon Z Star Diamond had quite a thick cover, so you need to compress it well to get the maximum distance out of this ball.

Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball review

When it came to spin I was impressed with the stopping power the Srixon Z-Star had with higher lofted irons and wedges out on the course. But again I struggled to stop the ball with my 5-iron into par 3’s due to not enough compression. Into the wind, the Z Star Diamond did not spin up and had a powerful mid-range flight.

Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf ball review

The overall feel of the Srixon Z-Star Diamond was a little on the hard side compared to other golf balls, but is understandable with its design. Around the greens, I was still able to control and feel the ball well and got some great spin and stopping power using higher wedges. Despite being a harder-feeling golf ball the sound didn’t bother me at all off the face of the putter and rolled well and true to how I struck my putt.

A box of Srixon Z Star Diamond golf balls retail at £34.99 which is a great price for a high performance, tour standard golf ball.

The Srixon Z Star Diamond is a ball for a particular player. You need to be able to swing fast and hard if you want to get the maximum out of this golf ball. However, if you hit the ball hard, swing fast or are a high level player this golf ball is great at offering spin into greens, mid range penetrating flight without compromising feel.
