An insurgence in the world of putters is seemingly upon us. We have seen the success LAB Golf putters have had with their lie angle balanced technology, which helps golfers to return the club face to square, Odyssey have now included similar technology in their latest release – the Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square putters.

The Odyssey Square 2 Square putters are to appeal to golfers looking to minimise their face rotation and ultimately being able to putt the ball on line more consistently. As part of the line-up Odyssey have released three models, a Double Wide (left below), a #7 (right below) and a Jailbird putter (middle below).

What makes these ‘Square 2 Square’ putters so appealing? Let’s take a look…

Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square Putters: The Technology

Visually, this line of putters have a navy blue pvd finish that offers a premium look. For those Odyssey traditionalists out there, the Jailbird model comes with the brand’s classic Versa alignment.

The technologies used and explored in the Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square putters are all about creating a putter that wants to stay square throughout the golfer’s stroke without any assistance from a golfer’s putter stoke mechanics. This is as a result of the modern centre shafted design, the putter features, that makes it Stroke Balanced.

Odyssey’s modern centre shafted design is as a result of entering the shaft on the cg plane of the putter. Doing this allows the putters to rest with the toe up in a reverse torque position, opposite of a traditional putter with a toe hang.

Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square #7 Putter Review

Traditional toe hang putters are designed to close when a golfer makes a stoke but require precise timing of the release. In this case the design promotes a square face throughout the stroke, being more suitable for a wider variety of golfers.

The shaft itself is a lightweight, steel, SL 90 shaft with 20-30 grams, which differ depending on the grip, of counterbalance weight in the butt end. Odyssey believes that this evolution of their Stroke Lab Weighting appeals to even more golfers.

Additionally, the putter was designed using artificial intelligence to help promote consist ball speed across the face of the putter – helping with getting those longer approach putts closer to the hole. This is as a result of the creation of contours on the Aluminium backer of the insert which Odyssey co-mould to a White Hot Urethane. As well as more consist ball speed it also allows for the classic White Hot feel that Tour players and club golfers alike have both loved to put in play.

Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square Double Wide Putter Review

Using a forward press when putting is something that can help a lot of amateur golfers, but not everyone is aware of it. A forward press was something that you would insert into your putting stroke as a form of coaching advice, but the Odyssey Ai-One Square 2 Square putters includes technology that guides the golfer into that forward press set up.

The putter has a built in forward press because there is 3.3° of forward shaft lean which pre-sets the hands in a forward press position to eliminate the opening of the putter face. Amateur golfers have a tendency to open the face when they forward press without any assistance.

Odyssey are the latest brand to join the square 2 square or lie angled balanced movement, whichever way you want to label it, something that other putter manufacturers have had great success with. There’s little to argue against when saying that this form of putter could have a hugely positive impact for amateur and even more established golfers in squaring up that putter face for more accurate performances on the greens.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
