We’ve seen them on tour for a while now but here are the details on the new TaylorMade Proto irons.
What we actually know now is that they are officially called the TaylorMade P750 and P770 irons.
Justin Rose has been among the TaylorMade staff players to be using these in recent weeks.
I did get a sneak peak of these at the TaylorMade launch late last year but they were desperate to keep them under wraps for a little while longer.
TaylorMade Proto Irons: The Technology
It’s clear these are the irons TaylorMade expect their tour players to use – essentially replacing the PSi irons.
We’ve recently had new M1 and M2 irons for handicap golfers and what we have here are sleek forged irons that were designed with input from tour players.
TaylorMade say they have used a Tungsten bar behind the lower part of the face in irons 3-7 for low and centred CG and added stability.
Forged from 1025 Carbon Steel, TaylorMade say the P770 will have a soft but solid feel.
The P770 irons also feature a thin topline and progressive offset for a clean look at address.
There’s a tight leading edge for better turf interaction and precision milled grooves for optimal spin and control.
TaylorMade Proto irons: The Line-up
So the P770 have all the hallmarks and looks of a forged players iron but have added forgiveness and stability.
The P750 are a little more compact with an even thinner topline so may be an option for a combo set with the P750 as short irons and the P770 in the longer irons.
They also incorporate a narrower sole and tighter leading edge for improved turf interaction, and similarly to the P750, include tungsten weighting which TaylorMade believe will make for optimal trajectory and shot-making.
