All the Gear: Iconic John Daly driver sells for silly money at auction
It’s been an exciting couple of weeks as we’ve been learning about new Callaway and TaylorMade gear for 2018.
But we can’t talk about it as all under embargo. We’re literally sworn to secrecy. We have to sign things and everything.
I was thinking the other day when driving down the M4, what if I just went rogue and ignored the embargoes?
It wouldn’t be wise as we wouldn’t get them to hit and review…
We did actually have some new gear this week though with the Wilson C300 irons and woods – go and check our reviews if you’ve not seen them already.
So let’s have a little round up of what we’ve spotted this week.
Iconic John Daly driver up for sale
The Cobra driver used by John Daly in his 1991 PGA Championship win at Crooked Stick, has gone up for auction.
Just look at this and think about the drivers we use today – you had to be a proper player to hit clubs like these.
It’s on with Green Jacket Auctions who say it’s “a highly unusual 44 1/2 driver with Cobra composite kevlar head with a titanium shaft.”
After Daly’s victory, he gave the driver to famed architect Pete Dye, who designed Crooked Stick.
We’re up to $4,500 at the moment but the auction is closing soon so you’d better be quick to get your hands on this piece of golfing history.
UPDATE: The driver sold for a whopping $17,300.
More tour players switching to new Callaway clubs
We have noticed a couple more players using Callaway clubs who have switched from TaylorMade and Ping respectively.
Maybe Sergio Garcia is setting a trend?
Chris Hanson – formerly with TaylorMade – was using the Callaway Epic Sub Zero driver and X forged irons and Matt Baldwin – formally Ping is now a Callaway player also using the Epic driver.
Maybe Callaway will swoop in and sign up a few more as TaylorMade let more players go? We’ll be keeping an eye out either way.
Sticking with Callaway – we’ve also seen Marc Leishman switching from the Callaway Apex Pro to the new X Forged irons.
We expect these new X Forged irons – which we reviewed recently – to be very popular among Callaway staff players in 2018.
Puma launch Spring clothing line
Not really what springs to mind when scraping snow off your car but we can all look forward to some cracking new polos and shirts from Puma next spring.
The brand say much of the new gear is inspired by fashion trends mainly seen outside of golf which can only be a good thing.
You may remember earlier this year they released a polo shirt which was designed to be worn un-tucked.
There’s some really smart technology in this new line including these Evoknit polos and tops.
What is Evoknit? Puma say it is a knitted design that utilises body mapped ventilation, strategically placed rib panels and seamless engineering for unrestricted range of motion.
The moisture-wicking, highly breathable fabric provides extreme comfort and breathability. We’ll take some of that (in May).
The also range includes the new P Snapback cap – who could forget – that Rickie Fowler wore on his way to winning the Hero World Challenge.
So keep your eyes on Fowler for the men’s and Lexi Thomson for the new ladies range.
More information is available on the Puma website.
