US investment firm AJ Capital Partners have bought the famous Rusacks hotel at St Andrews. At the heart of their revamp plans is an audacious rooftop bar overlooking the iconic 18th hole

If you thought the Open grandstand was the best view you could pay for when the Claret Jug returns to St Andrews in 2021 you might want to think again.

The new owners of golf’s most iconic hotel, Rusacks, have unveiled ambitious plans to build a rooftop bar looking over the Old Course’s 18th hole.

US-based investment firm, AJ Capital Partners, have bought the formerly Macdonald-owned hotel and are set to get to work on the Pilmour Links venue that adorns everyone’s treasured snaps of golf’s most famous finishing hole.

They’re going to add 44 rooms to the 70-bedroom property in a 42,000 square foot extension – with the renovations set to begin in the spring.

But perhaps the most exciting part of their plans is a 3,000 square-foot bar and restaurant area on the roof that will show the 18th, Swilcan Bridge and Fife coast in all its glory.

The project, which will also bring a complete revamp of the existing rooms, is expected to be complete in time for the 150th Open Championship in 2021.

“St Andrews is one of the most iconic destinations in the world, and our team is honoured to embark upon bringing our unique approach to hospitality to this incredibly historic and inspiring community,” said AJ Capital Partners CEO Ben Weprin.

“We look forward to creating an experience for both guests and locals alike that celebrates and commemorates St Andrews’ storied past for years to come.”

The firm added the design would be inspired by centuries of St Andrews history, as well as the coastal position and golf tradition.

“The energy and spirit of golf legend Old Tom Morris will be felt throughout the hotel with both playful and subdued nods that encourage visitors to uncover the tales of the sport’s greats and their storied victories.”
