Introduction

Iron play can be a big area of weakness in a lot of golfer’s game and it’s understandable as they’re the smallest clubs to hit. With that in mind, it’s about creating a way to play golf with enjoyment and ultimately with the tools that will best help you score. The Eleven Golf Hybrid & Iron Set is built exactly for that. Ranging from a GW thorough to a 4 iron, these clubs combine the control of irons with the forgiveness of hybrids. In this Eleven golf hybrid iron set review, we’ll see if it really helps simplify your game and how they perform compared to a bag of irons.

NCG SUMMARY

A lot of golfer’s struggle with their iron play and it can be demoralising. The Eleven hybrid set uses all of the same lofts you’d find in irons but into a more friendly, confidence inspiring hybrid shape.

In terms of performance, you get a higher launch than the comparative iron but more run out due to reduced spin.

Each one has its own head cover labelled with the loft and number. They’re just £90 a club which is amazing value for money.

Key benefits and downsides

Key benefitsDownsides
Forgiving– As you’d expect from hybrids even the off centre strikes are more consistent than with an iron.Less spin – Going into greens the decent angle is less and so is the spin so the ball runs out more.
Higher launch – Despite being stronger lofted than my current irons each of the hybrids gave a higher launch.
Price– For £90 a club they’re great value for money!

First Impressions

I’m a player who has always had hybrids in my set up. When I was younger I struggled a lot with long irons having a 6, 5 and 4 hybrid in play. They’re a type of club designed to be easier to hit as they have a lower and deeper centre of gravity. This makes it easier to launch the ball high, even on off-centre strikes. Whilst I’m familiar with hybrids, I can’t say I’ve ever come across a full set of them but I love the concept. There are so many golfers who struggle with iron play in general and so these are great tools to make it easier.

Each club comes with a sock head cover with the number of club and the loft.

Set options

Whilst Eleven had sent a set out to me in 4-PW, there are other combinations of sets as well as the option to purchase individually. I think this is great as you might want help 4-8 iron for example but are happy to continue with standard irons and wedges in the rest of the set up.

The Eleven hybrids cater for left or right handed golfers as well as being able to choose from 5 different shafts. The lengths of these come as either women’s or men’s standard. There is also 4 grip sizes on offer so you can really get the best make up for your game.

How I undertook the review

I tested the Eleven hybrid and iron set at Ormskirk Golf Club to gather data on the course as well as during a round at my home club Hickleton.

What I found

In terms of looks over the ball these clubs certainly give you that confidence a player who struggles with irons would be looking for. The 4/5 are more of a traditional looking hybrid with their lofts and shaping but then down you see more and more loft. The PW was a completely different look for me, so lofted at address as if the only direct the ball could travel was up.

I compared the hybrids to my current set of irons to see what the differences were. The lofts were two degrees stronger throughout the bag which does contribute to more distance but otherwise it was a straight test. I used a Trackman out on the course with the standard Titleist Pro V1x golf ball.

First up was PW, the club which I was most excited to test. The data table below shows my current pitching wedge data on the left followed by the Eleven Pw on the right. As you would expect with the loft difference I gained 5 yards with the hybrid wedge. The Eleven PW launched 4.3 degrees higher. I found that over the ball it looked very lofted and it went up so easily off the clubface. Although the overall apex of the ball flight didn’t differ much between the two. I generated more club speed with the hybrid which has a 70g shaft over my current 95g iron shafts.

Spin rate was the biggest difference that I found between the two clubs. My wedge spun at 5031 RPM vs the hybrid at only 2357 RPM. This then resulted in 10 yards worth of roll compared to my wedge which only ran out 4 yards.

Moving into 7 iron, again the left data table below shows my current 7 vs the Eleven 7 hybrid on the right. Carry distance was again up with the hybrid. Launch angle was a couple of degrees higher but the peak height didn’t quite reach my current 7 iron. Landing angle was also flatter on the 7 hybrid over my iron resulting in 12 yards worth of roll out compared to my current 5 yards. This is also reflected in the spin rates as the 7 hybrid only spun at 2593 RPM over 5123 RPM.

Overall, this isn’t a problem for a player who is looking for a club that’s easier to get the ball in the air with as they won’t be requiring stopping power going into the green. As the courses are firming up for summer and it’s already difficult to stop the ball I tend to play short and allow for run anyway so the Eleven hybrids worked well for that.

NCG Final Say

These are a great option for any player who struggles with iron play. Whether you’re looking for a full set or a select few clubs the Eleven hybrids are a great way of boosting your confidence and improving your score this season.

And, for £90 they’re really great value for money!

How it compares to other irons/hybrids

Compared to super game improvement irons such as the Ping G740 irons the Eleven hybrids offer a nicer shaping. You don’t need to worry about a chunky sole interacting with the ground as it’s built into a shaping that can be hit more on the up.
