Ben Hogan have changed the way we buy golf clubs – but how does it work?

We sometimes use affiliate links to products and services on retailer sites for which we can receive compensation if you click on those links or make purchases through them.

Ben Hogan are, in their words, “changing the status quo”. So we checked out their new model and put the latest range to the test

Ben Hogan review

“Golf equipment has gotten too expensive,” says the Ben Hogan website, “and the process of buying it is far too complicated.” It concludes with a confident: “We’re changing that.”

Founded by the golf legend in 1953, the same year he won the last three of his nine majors, the company that bears his name changed the way they sell golf clubs in 2017. In order to cut out the middle man and avoid the consumer paying middlemen or retail markups, you can order your clubs through their website and they will custom build them in their Texas factory then deliver them straight to your door.

So we thought we’d give it a go and ordered a full set of custom-built clubs online for our Ben Hogan review. The process was really easy simply pick out what model and shafts you want as well as extra details such as lie angle, club length, and grip size. Then you just sit and wait for the clubs to arrive at your door…

Ben Hogan review: GS53 driver

Ben Hogan review

Spec: 10.5°, Hzrdus Smoke Black 5.5 (60g)

I found the driver really easy to hit and was generating a very consistent high ball flight.

I would say my distance was slightly reduced but I think this was down to the stiffer shaft.

But overall I was impressed with the controlled ball flight and shape of the shots I was hitting.

Ben Hogan review: GS53 3-wood

Ben Hogan review

Spec: 14°, Hzrdus Smoke Black 5.5 (60g)

This was one of my favourite clubs in the set, I have quite a shallow angle of attack so often find 3-woods hard to flight but this really easy to launch and I was getting consistent very straight ball flights.

Ben Hogan review: VKTR hybrids

Ben Hogan review

Spec: 18° and 22°, UST recoil ES 75 F3/Reg

This hybrid has a very iron like shaping with the front being squared off, initially this shape didn’t suit eye.

However I found I struck these really well it was very easy to hit the middle of face.

Because of this my front to back dispersion excellent as was my accuracy which is key when firing into long par 4s and par 5s.

Ben Hogan review: PTx Pro irons

Ben Hogan review

Spec: 5-PW, KBS Tour 90-Reg, 2° flat, 0.5in shortened

The standout feature of these irons was the exceptional feel I had off the face giving me great feedback on strike quality and location.

I would say these had a premium on accuracy over distance and I felt I had so much control over my ball flight and shot shape.

Ben Hogan review: Equalizer wedges

Ben Hogan review

Spec: 50°, 54° and 58°, KBS Tour 90-Reg, 2° flat, 0.5inch shortened

Good control of flight and spin around the greens.

Ben Hogan review: BHB02 putter

Ben Hogan review

Spec: BHB02, 32.5 inches, Super Stroke Traxion Pistol GT 1.0

Personally I thought the black finish on this putter looks great behind the ball. The simple shape and styling also really suited my eye.

I would say the sound off the face was slightly higher than I am used to but the roll of the ball was really impressive. I liked the weight distribution I could feel more weight in the head which helped me control my stroke.

Ben Hogan review: NCG verdict

Overall I really enjoyed testing these clubs. Across the set I felt there was a premium on feel, excellent dispersion, and accuracy.

You can see just how accurate I was throughout the set from the Trackman dispersion data below with the worst shot finishing 18 yards offline.

Ben Hogan review

For me, the unique method of ordering new clubs is a plus point. It allows the consumer to get high-quality golf clubs at a lower price point, which can only be a good thing.
