Wilson’s Staff Model CB irons sit right in the sweet spot of the better-player market.

Designed for golfers who want a feel of a blade but are after a touch more forgiveness, especially on their longer irons. Wilson has designed these to be one of the most compelling cavity-back options they have produced in years.

To find out just how compelling they are, read our full review below…

NCG Summary

NCG Summary

The Wilson Staff Model CB irons are a superb option for better players who want classic looks and premium forged feel but aren’t quite ready to commit to a full blade.

They deliver consistent spin rates and quality distance control all without sacrificing their forgiving nature.

PROS

  • Soft feel
  • They have a classic blade look to them
  • More forgiving than a set of blades

CONS

  • I still feel they are a touch demanding for some higher handicappers

First Impressions

At address, the Staff Model CB irons are almost identical to the blades from the same range. The compact head shape, minimal offset and thin top line deliver the clean, traditional look that most blades are famed for.

From heel to toe, I thought the head felt short and precise, which inspired confidence without looking overly intimidating.

The brushed satin finish is a smart touch, as it reduces glare on the few times the sun may show its face this year. It also just reinforces that classic, understated look that I am big fan of.

You won’t find unnecessary branding or visual clutter here, these irons are a delight to look at.

On the range

I thought the CB irons offered a noticeable step up in forgiveness compared to a blade, The launch, carry and spin rates were all extremely consistent, which made control distance a fairly simple task.

This is all achieved without the CBs straying into distance-iron territory and retaining that blade-like feel.

My testing showed that short irons are able to produce predictable carry yardages with high spin rates, while mid-irons showed a slight increase in ball speeds and an extra bit of launch thanks to the cavity design.

Long irons, particularly explaining the appeal of the CB, proved far more playable than a blade equivalent. The slightly larger head and redistributed mass did its job in creating a more confidence-inspiring look.

For me, this makes them a realistic option for golfers who might otherwise struggle with traditional players’ irons.

The cavity-back design subtly shifts weight around the perimeter, helping stabilise ball speed and launch on off-centre strikes. It’s not a game-improvement iron by any stretch, but the added forgiveness is meaningful without compromising control.

Additionally, I think these can also works brilliantly as part of a combo set. They blend seamlessly with other Staff Model options thanks to its near-identical look at address.

So, if you prefer a tad more forgiveness in your long irons, give these some serious thought.

NCG Verdict

Overall, I think the Wilson 2026 Staff Model CB irons offer the best of both worlds. They have the look of and feel of blades whilst delivering a bit of extra help when you don’t quite find the middle of the face.

In terms of the performance, the consistency and reliability is a big part of why plenty of golfers should be giving these some thought.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
