Elie: One of the finest links courses in Fife

Elie is about as traditional a golf course as you will find anywhere in Scotland. It epitomises Old Tom Morris’s design principles and is an object lesson in what makes a golf course engaging and enjoyable to play.

It’s also one of the finest links courses in Fife and for visitors, touring golfers and members alike it offers a warm welcome and an honest test of golf played over classic links terrain.

Elie has steadily climbed the ranks of the NCG Top 100 rankings over the past few years – no doubt due to greater awareness of the course on the back of the money that has been invested in it.

History

The game has been played across this gently rippling linksland since the 15th century. And just like St Andrews, the golf is seemingly inseparable from the community itself.

The Golf House Club was established in May 1875 and takes its name from the golf house, or clubhouse, that was begun in the same year and completed in 1877 for the princely sum of £1,000.

Since then, the clubhouse has been steadily upgraded as time and circumstance have demanded and it has recently enjoyed a £1.25m refurbishment, giving it the excellent facilities that members and visitors now enjoy.

All of the work has been done sympathetically, and the clubhouse still holds true to its roots and retains its sense of history

What makes it special

The enjoyment at Elie is second-to-none.

It’s not a Championship course, but the way in which the course is laid out with its stunning backdrops makes up for that.

With views over the Firth of Forth to North Berwick, Muirfield and Gullane are quite literally unmissable.

Where does it rank?

28th in Scotland, 85th in GB&I, 5th in Fife, and 21st in Fun.

Where is it?

The village of Elie sits in the East Neuk of Fife, some 12 miles south of St Andrews.
