Everybody seems to flock to Southport & Ainsdale’s royal neighbour Royal Birkdale. For those who choose not to come to S&A, they really are missing out on a treat.
The club is set on a gorgeous piece of rolling links land, and there’s a railway line between the coast and the course.
It has a very natural feel, although it is somewhat old-fashioned with some blind drives and obscured approach shots.
History
In 1933 Southport & Ainsdale was chosen to host the Ryder Cup match – Great Britain versus America. Having staged the Dunlop-Southport Tournament in 1931 and 1933, the Ryder Cup Committee of the Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club were not without experience of large golfing events.
Only The Belfry has hosted more home soil Ryder Cups than S&A.
And then in 1937 they did it all over again. Southport & Ainsdale is privileged to have staged not one, but two Ryder Cups – the latter concluding with the Americans becoming the first team to win an overseas match with victory over Great Britain in 1937
What makes it special?
Undoubtedly the two Ryder Cups that the Club hosted back in the 1930s.
Where is it?
A few miles outside Southport heading south along the A565.
Where does it rank?
26th in England, 74th in GB&I, 67th in Value
