Why we’d rather be playing this incredible modern links

Machynys Peninsula: A must-play modern Welsh links

A relatively new Jack Nicklaus design on the outskirts of Llanelli, Machynys Peninsula impresses for its thoughtful routing and strong holes.

As its name hints at, it is nestled around water – Carmarthen Bay to be specific.

Machynys is an impressive effort by Nicklaus and his team considering they were given unremarkable, open land near to the coast with which to work. The course is routed in two distinct loops with a parkland front nine and an inward half that has more of a links feel beside the sea.

Gary Nicklaus acted as chief designer on behalf of his father and his favourite hole is the 451-yard 16th which, as he says, “is played across the lake from right behind the clubhouse [and] is probably one of the most beautiful holes on the course”.

He adds: “The view from the green of the whole bay is spectacular, whether the tide is in or out.”

History

The modern links on Machynys Peninsula was opened in 2005 with a hefty budget of $3.5 million shelled out for the layout and an even greater sum of money spent on the clubhouse.

However, money alone can never ensure success with a new golfing project as location has a large part to play in determining whether a new course will attract rave review, but the stunning site that Machynys is built on as good as guarantees its position as a “must play” venue in Wales.

The standard scratch score here from the tournament tees is three-over par, so you know Machynys Peninsula can be set up for some serious competitive golf, and indeed, it hosted the Ladies European Tour for four straight years from 2005 to 2008, right after its opening.

What makes Machynys Peninsula special?

The shaping of the layout included the creation of 25 acres of new lakes – salt and fresh water – 12 miles of irrigation pipes and six miles of drainage pipes, to ensure the course is in top condition all year round.

The large and airy clubhouse is superbly fitted out with a spa and brasserie and there are excellent views out over the course.

For a golfing test of this standard, the green fees are also remarkably reasonable. If you haven’t yet been, a round here goes highly recommended.

Where is Machynys Peninsula?

Machynys Peninsula lies on the banks of the River Loughor in South Wales, with the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) situated across the water. Llanelli is just a mile or so to the north of Machynys, while the A484 and A4138 provide suitable options for those travelling by car. Cardiff Airport is the largest and busiest in Wales, and is around 50 miles to the east.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
