Cavendish Golf Club is simply one of the finest versions of moorland golf that you will find anywhere in the United Kingdom.
The moors of the Peak District provide a unique challenge. It is a course that is shy of 6,000 yards, but with a strong breeze around, it becomes a course that forces players to plot their way around.
Designed by the great Dr Alister Mackenzie, one of the greatest golf course architects to have ever lived, the routing at Cavendish offers a little bit of everything, with driveable par 4s and short par 3s a key part of the course.
History
The opening of Cavendish Golf Club dates back more than a century, to 1925.
The great Dr Alister Mackenzie, of Alwoodley and Moortown fame, was sought after by the Duke of Devonshire, with the hopes of creating a stunning golfing layout over the moors. Not much has changed with the course since then, and it remains one of the shortest venues on the NCG Top 100s: England list.
Mackenzie would go on to design the likes of Cypress Point and of course, Augusta National, during his time in the United States, with the latter called the ‘Inspiration for Augusta’ as the topography of the Georgian land was not dissimilar to what MacKenzie had encountered in Derbyshire.

When you think of moorland golf in the United Kingdom, Cavendish is a course that springs to mind, thanks to the glorious layout that Alister MacKenzie set down over a century ago.
It is also a course that proves length is not everything. At well under 6,000 yards, the Peak District’s finest might seem like it will be an easy ride, but when you get on to the moors, you will find that it bears its teeth, especially in blustery conditions!

Where is it?
Cavendish Golf Club is situated in the Peak District, with sits just south of both Manchester and Sheffield. It is located in the county of Derbyshire, with those two major cities both being around an hour from the golf club in their respective directions. Cavendish sits just outside the town of Buxton, with the A53 and A6 both nearby to provide good road links.
Buxton Train Station is just a mile from Cavendish Golf Club, with the station sitting on the end of a line from Manchester Piccadilly. Trains run in both directions, to and from Buxton, every hour. For international visitors to the region, Manchester Airport is just 20 miles to the northwest of Cavendish, and it is the busiest airport in the country outside of London.
