Recently turned professional, Christo Lamprecht qualified for the 151st Open Championship in 2023 by winning the British Amateur Championship at Hillside earlier that year.
Standing at 6 feet 8″ the South African amateur is believed to be the tallest-ever competitor at The Open. His height has led to some serious custom fitting to dial in his gear.
He has now recently signed a deal with Under Armour to wear the brand’s clothing.

What’s in Christo Lamprecht’s bag?
Christo is a Ping ambassador and nearly has a full bag of their equipment in play. At the top of the bag, he opts to use the brands low-spinning G430 LST model, he has a 9-degree head which is lofted down to 7.5 degrees. It certainly seems to be working, as he has been clocking over 200mph of ball speed on the driving range this week! His comfortable average carry is between 315 and 320 yards which is a distance most of us can only dream of.
Interestingly Lamprecht used to use a driver with a much longer than the standard shaft. The R&A and USGA’s new Model Local Rule G-10 now prohibits the use of clubs longer than 46 inches meaning Christo has had to adapt his swing and game to a shorter driver.
The only non-Ping club he has in play is his Titleist TSR2 3-wood. Interestingly, this is the only fairway wood he carries in his golf bag.
Lamprecht carries a Ping i230 3-iron as a driving iron before transitioning into a full set of Ping Blueprint irons. His iron shafts are 1.5 inches longer than standard to help accommodate his height. He said he experimented with shaft length with Ping but found if the clubs were made any longer it started to affect forgiveness.

Christo opts for a three-wedge set-up all in the Ping Glide Forged Pro model, all have a standard full 10-bounce sole. Interestingly Christo has a spare lob wedge with 6 degrees of bounce that he would usually use on links, but he actually feels the turf isn’t firm enough for him to make the switch this week and the extra bounce gives him more strike forgiveness in Hoylake’s penal bunkers.
To round out his bag he carries a Ping 2021 Harwood Armlock putter. He initially swapped to armlock style putting just over a year ago, it is clearly working as it has helped fire him to the top of the leaderboard. He also uses a Titleist Pro V1 golf ball.
The South African became the latest athlete to join Under Armour’s roster. Lamprecht will rep the brand’s clothing and may even get signature clothing items of his own, similar to how Jordan Speith has collated with the brand over the years.
