Tommy Fleetwood and his caddie Ian Finnis have held a longstanding partnership on the golf course, and an even longer friendship off it.
Finnis, towering at six-foot-seven, is one of the more recognisable loopers on tour. He and Fleetwood first connected in their amateur days on the Merseyside golf scene. Fleetwood grew up in Southport and Finnis worked as an assistant professional at Formby Hall, where Fleetwood played in his younger years.
They began working together in 2016 when Fleetwood was playing regularly on the DP World Tour. It is rather extraordinary to look at his 2016 season and only see four top-10s. It was the following year that he started to become the player he is today.
You can’t help but think that Finnis’ presence and friendship with Fleetwood on tour have worked to his benefit. In 2017, they won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the French Open, which springboarded his career and led to a first Ryder Cup start for Europe in 2018. 2017 was also the year when he came fourth at the US Open.

Meet Ian Finnis: Caddie has been by Tommy Fleetwood’s side for many years
Finnis is also a top golfer. According to the My EG app (England Golf), his handicap index is +5.1. So, he is essentially a professional golfer himself who belongs to West Lancs – one of the best golf courses in England.
Finnis and Fleetwood’s partnership went through a short break in early 2024, when Finnis underwent open-heart surgery following a serious bacterial infection that affected his heart valves. At Final Open Qualifying that year at West Lancs in early July, NCG bumped into Finnis and exclusively reported that he would be back carrying for Fleetwood at the Scottish Open later that month.
They have shared many, many good times together, including Ryder Cup victories with Team Europe in 2018, 2023 and 2025. In 2023, Fleetwood secured the point Europe needed to take the cup back to the continent, which they lost in 2021 at Whistling Straits.

One of the best moments of the duo’s partnership came at the 2025 Tour Championship at East Lake, where Fleetwood won his first title on the PGA Tour, his first victory in the States, which also made him the FedEx Cup champion.
Towards the end of 2025, Fleetwood won another DP World Tour title – this time, at the DP World India Championship, capping off a super year where he was part of another successful European Ryder Cup effort.
Finnis has a wife and two children. He is married to former England women’s football goalkeeper Rachel Brown‑Finnis. They got married in 2013 and live in Crosby, Liverpool, which is the village that houses West Lancs Golf Club.
