The US Open is regarded as the ‘toughest test in golf’ with long, firm courses, thick, punishing rough and lightning-quick greens.

Since the first US Open in 1895, the tournament has been held at the very best golf courses in the United States.

Oakmont played host to the 2025 US Open, which has hosted the tournament more than any other venue. Shinnecock Hills is back to host the 2026 championship.

The event has been won by the best players ever to pick up a club, such as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

In 2021, the USGA introduced a strategy of anchor sites that will host the tournament in the next few decades. The first to be given the anchor site designation was Pinehurst No.2, which hosted Bryson DeChambeau’s victory in 2024.

Oakmont and Pebble Beach are also anchor sites on the rota, further establishing their reputations as the most famous and testing championship venues in America.

Below is the list of future booked venues, but they will all have been picked on their own merits. The courses need to provide a stern test, but they also need to have the infrastructure and space to cater for the many grandstands, spectator tents, hospitality and general areas for spectators that a major championship demands.

Transport links and access will no doubt be considered with each site, as fans need to be able to reach the course and leave at the end of the day through various means of public and personal transport.

Let’s take a look at all of the US Open venues while you’re thinking.
