Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have announced a new competition to help invigorate the PGA Tour which includes stadium style events amid the ongoing threat of LIV Golf.
The tech-driven league named ‘TGL’ – which signals the first project of McIlroy and Woods’ new TMRW sports firm – will feature six teams consisting of three PGA Tour players, each of which will face off against one another in custom-built venues.
Beginning in January 2024, 15 matches will take place on Monday nights within a two-hour window, and have been designed to complement the new lucrative PGA Tour schedule.
“I have the utmost respect for the game of golf, and the TGL, while rooted in the traditions of the game, is taking a bold step into the increasingly tech-fuelled future of sports.” McIlroy said.
“TGL will tap into the appeal of team golf within an exciting, fan-friendly environment, comparable to sitting courtside at an NBA game. TGL will widen the appeal of golf to younger and more diverse fans and serve as another avenue to introduce people to the game I love.”
The news comes just hours after the PGA Tour announced a series of changes to their schedule in an effort to counter the ongoing threat of LIV Golf.
Last week, the PGA Tour held a crunch player meeting at the BMW Championship, which involved the likes of Woods, McIlroy and several other key members.
