Gene Sarazen became the first golfer to complete the career grand slam in golf when he won the 1935 Masters in a 36-hole play-off against Craig Wood. The 1935 tournament is famous in golf for producing the ‘shot heard around the world’ when Sarazen made an albatross two at the 15th hole after hitting an equivalent of a 4-wood nowadays into the Par-5 at Augusta National.
Sarazen won a total of 39 PGA Tour titles to put him tied 11th on the all time list alongside fellow American Tom Watson. He won eight times in a single season in 1930 which was a tour record at the time.
Tom Irwin
Tom is a lifetime golfer, now over 30 years playing the game. 2023 marks 10 years in golf publishing and he is still holding down a + handicap at Alwoodley in Leeds. He has played over 600 golf courses, and has been a member of at least four including his first love Louth, in Lincolnshire. Tom likes unbranded clothing, natural fibres, and pencil bags. Seacroft in Lincolnshire is where it starts and ends.
