The decade in golf: NCG’s best putt

Of all the thousands of amazing, knee-knocking putts from the past decade, our Fourball team attempts to narrow it down to their four favourites

So which Boss of the Moss had the greatest stand-out moment from the past decade?

Dan: I think it would have to involve Jordan Spieth, because I have never seen a player hole more putts that really matter. He has to be the putter of the decade. It’s hard to quantify statistically – more an ability to hit the right putt at the right time.

Let’s plump for the ‘go get that’ eagle putt at Birkdale’s 15th in the 2017 Open, which remains, remarkably, Spieth’s most recent win.

Mark: It’s strange how little a putt to win a major actually comes up so, for 18th-hole heroics, I’d go with Suzann Pettersen over Martin Kaymer – just. The build-ups to these types of putts are extraordinary and both completed unlikely and incredible fightbacks.

But given Pettersen’s was slightly longer and had more break – and she had spent the past 18 months solely being a mum – that would get my vote.

Steve: How good do you think my memory is? When was Tiger’s at Sawgrass? Oh.

So here’s one out of left field for you. Paula Creamer’s eagle putt, from 75 feet, to win the play-off at the HSBC in Singapore, in 2014, was bonkers.

I could stand over that shot all day and never get close to executing it.

Andy: A few stand out for different reasons but I’m going for Justin Rose’s putt on 17 in his singles match against Phil Mickelson at the 2012 Ryder Cup. As the day went on and the unfathomable began to seem fathomable, I remember thinking it would boil down to his and Garcia’s match.

With Mickelson in for par, the Englishman faced a must-make 50-footer and sunk it to keep the dream alive before going on to complete the job at 18.

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
