Another slice of Masters history for Tiger Woods

He was made to sweat, but the 18-time major champion has equalled another of golf’s long-standing records at Augusta

Tiger Woods might be a shadow of his former self and reduced to playing only the biggest events, but he continues to defy the odds and write himself into the history books.

The five-time Masters champion won’t win a sixth Green Jacket here at Augusta, but he equal the record for the most consecutive cuts made at Augusta.

It was an anxious wait for Woods, who finished his second round in the pouring rain on Saturday morning. A birdie at 15 moved him a couple of shots inside the cut line, but dropped shots at 17 and 18 meant he was relying on Justin Thomas or Sungjae Im to make the weekend.

And when Thomas failed to get up and down for par at the last, it meant Woods had made the cut for the 23rd straight time at the Masters.

Woods’ sole MC came as an amateur in 1996, his second appearance in the tournament, and has played all four rounds in every one of his starts since turning pro.

He ties the record of Gary Player, who made 23 straight cuts from 1959 to 1982, and Fred Couples, who achieved the feat between 1983 and 2007.

Couples is also celebrating a slice of Masters cut history on Saturday morning after the American became the oldest player to make it into the third and fourth rounds.

The 1992 champion, at 63 years, six months, and five days, edges out Bernhard Langer, who was 63 years, two months, and 18 days old when he made the cut in 2020.

Woods withdrew from the tournament on Sunday morning after aggravating his existing injuries.
