The second round of any tournament is extremely important for players at the top and nearer the bottom of the PGA Tour leaderboard.
Another under-par round after day one could award you with a late tee time on Saturday and the privilege of being in contention to win the golden trophy that the winner of the Players Championship receives at the Stadium Course of TPC Sawgrass.
It is almost like moving day before moving day but as we see every year at the Players Championship the final stretch can turn dreams into nightmares, particularly on holes 16, 17 and 18 where the large lake dominates the landscape and strikes fear into the players.
An errant shot right of the hole on the par-5 16th will have your potential eagle look turn into a seven, and need we say more about the par-17th hole? This is one of the most famous holes in the sport. It has crowned champions but also sunk hopes.
It is only 137 yards long and a shot that deviates either side of the small island green will plunge in the drink, and severely damage your prospects heading into the weekend. To the relief of many golf fans, there will still be a cut at the Players Championship, an element that has been removed in five of the biggest events on the PGA Tour schedule.
There are eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour in 2025. The Players Championship isn’t one of them, as it is somewhat of a stand-alone entity that sits between them and the majors. Three of these Signature Events have 36-hole cuts (the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Genesis Invitational and the Memorial), but the other five do not have 36-hole cuts (the Travelers, the Pebble Beach Pro Am, the Sentry, the Truist Championship and the RBC Heritage).

Friday at the Players Championship, or any tournament, is always exciting because there are also players battling to make the halfway cut with every par and birdie they can find. Sometimes, it is the players at the bottom end of the spectrum battling for their cards that are more exciting to follow than the stars competing for the $4.5 million prize fund at the top end.
Every round has its quirks and reasons for excitement and this is what fans can also be excited about when peering down at the tee sheet for the second round of the Players Championship in 2025.
