The second day of The Open Championship is one of the most exciting days in golf, as it is the oldest major in the game and the only one that is played on links courses in the UK – the best type of golf.
There will be players looking to move up the leaderboard and contend at the top, and there will be players looking to make some birdies and avoid missing the cut.
Jordan Spieth won The Open in 2017, which was the last time the event was held at Royal Birkdale. He thrilled the fans with a calamity hole on the 13th in the final round, but then surged to victory with a flurry of birdies and eagles.
The Open is returning to Southport for the 11th time. The Open was first held at Birkdale in 1954 – a championship that was won by the legendary Peter Thomson. He won his fifth Claret Jug at the same venue 11 years later.
The Claret Jug is one of the most prestigious things you can win in the sport. That and the Green Jacket awarded to the winner of the Masters are probably on par with each other.
The last winner of the Claret Jug was Scottie Scheffler, who won it comfortably at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
Scheffler had won the PGA Championship just two months before, so it was a truly memorable year for the American, who became a four-time major champion and further proved himself as the sport’s most dominant force.
