The second day of The Open Championship is always exciting. It is the oldest major in the game and the only one that is played on links courses – the best type of golf.

In 2019, Shane Lowry remarkably won in front of his home Irish crowd and in convincing fashion, too. He won his first major at Royal Portrush in what is one of the great achievements of recent times in the sport.

The Open is returning to Northern Ireland for the first time in six years, after it became the most recent addition to the Open rota. It first hosted the championship in 1951 when Max Faulkner won by two shots over Argentinian Antonio Cerda.

The Claret Jug is one of the most prestigious things you can win in the sport. That and the Green Jacket awarded to the winner of the Masters are probably on par with each other.

The last winner of the Claret Jug was Xander Schauffele, who won it in brutal conditions at Royal Troon in 2024. He fought off the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Billy Horschel and crowd favourite Justin Rose in some horrid wind and rain to secure his second major title.

Schauffele had won the PGA Championship just two months before, so it was a truly memorable year for the American, who many doubted had the grit to win a major championship.

This year, Stewart Cink will hit the first tee shot in round two, and Rory McIlroy will play with Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood at 10.09 am.
