Just imagine being a member at Augusta National Golf Club.
For 99.9% of us, our imagination is all we have in this regard. You don’t become a member of the Masters tournament host venue, you have to be invited.
Given the widely-reported list of members down Magnolia Lane, you need to be a billionaire, a politician, a world-class sportsperson or a Masters champion (who are awarded honorary memberships).
The club keep things tight. It is private, of course. In 2015, Bloomberg revealed 118 people who belonged to Augusta. To be invited as a member is seen as the height of corporate success, not least because it’s alleged there are only 300 members.
Among the more recognisable names would be Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft in 1975. This is the level of achievement that amounts to an offer to play at Augusta National. Another familiar face is Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, who is estimated as the seventh richest person in the world.
There is also former US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who was on the raft of two women members the club welcomed in 2012. The other was financier Darla Moore, who is the former president and a partner of the private investment firm Rainwater Inc.
Sir Michael Bonallack, the former secretary and captain of the R&A and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, was also a member. Bonallack was one of the great amateur golfers in history, winning the Amateur Championship and English Amatuer five times and the Brabazon Trophy four times. Bonallack died in September 2023.
In October 2023, 10-time major-winning icon Annika Sorenstam became the newest female member of the club. Women weren’t even allowed membership until 2012.
“I’ve known Annika for quite some time, and I think she is going to be a great addition to the club. I can tell you, she can still play, and she was just a delight to be with,” chairman Fred Ridley said.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is also a member. Manning often pops up at pro-ams and has played in The Match, an edition of the exhibition golf series, with Phil Mickelson, basketball stars Steph Curry and Charles Barkley.
