Hello. Welcome to The Slam, National Club Golfer’s look back on the golfing week. A week in which very little has actually happened, apart from the Masters being on.
You all know what happened. I mean, if you’re reading this then you sure as hell watched the world’s best players strut their stuff round the most pristine course on the planet in the season’s first major.
Admit it, you were disappointed Rory McIlroy didn’t get over the line. Then when you were disappointed Rickie Fowler didn’t get over the line. Then you were disappointed Jordan Spieth didn’t get over the line.
Anyone but Patrick, eh? You cynical lot.
I’m not going to talk about the dark side of Patrick Reed – you’ve almost certainly read far too much already – and instead I’m going to focus on Fowler.
I wrote a few weeks back that I was really concerned that he just isn’t going to get it done at a major. Well, I’m now more than convinced the other way. That’s the most calm I’ve ever seen him play in the final round of one of golf’s big four. And now all his best buddies have majors, he’ll be more determined than ever.
And that birdie at 18 earned him almost half a million dollars extra for finishing solo 2nd, so at least we know who’s buying the drinks on their Spring Break trip this year…

I have to give a shout-out to Tony Finau. Dude dislocated his ankle during the pre-Masters Par 3 Tournament and then popped it back in like it was no big deal.
After a tense wait for the doctor to give him the all-clear, Finau led the tournament for much of the opening day before going on to finish in a tie for 10th.

Honestly, I stub a toe and I’m sofa-bound for several weeks.
Finau later posted the photos of his ankle on social media. If you don’t want to see them, look away now…
Tiger Woods 2018 US Open is on!
And Tiger Woods has confirmed he will play in this year’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Woods is in the final year of his 10-year exemption after winning in 2008 and I’m sure you’re looking forward to it as much as I am.
Now I don’t want to go all Springer’s Final Thought on you here, but I can’t have been alone when I saw this break and thought isn’t it great that we’re getting news of tournaments Tiger WILL play, rather than won’t.
And isn’t it nice to just be talking about him in a positive light again? Not that you’d know. Honestly, you should see our social feeds when we discuss the greatest player of all time.
