Who is Stacy Lewis?

Stacy Lewis is one of the best American golfers of the 21st Century, with two majors and 14 professional titles to her name.

Lewis was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1985 and began playing golf at the age of 9. She was a decorated amateur, and a four-time All-American at the University of Arkansas. After missing her first year due to back surgery on a long-term scoliosis issue, Lewis came back and was in sublime form. She won the SEC Tournament and was named SEC Freshman Golfer of the Year. In 2006, she won the Women’s Western Amateur, before winning the NCAA Division I Championship a year later.

She then won the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship on the LPGA Tour as an amateur, but the tournament is classed as unofficial as it only took place over one round due to rain. In 2008, Lewis made history at the Curtis Cup, becoming the first player to go a perfect 5-0-0 in a single edition of the tournament.

After turning professional in 2008, Lewis had to wait three years for her first victory, but it came on the grandest of stages. She was the winner at the Kraft Nabisco Championship (now known as the Chevron Championship). Two years later, she secured her second major crown, winning the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews.

Lewis first played in the Solheim Cup in 2011 following her first major victory. She then played in four consecutive editions of the tournament, before then becoming vice captain for the next two tournaments. Lewis was the captain for Team USA at the 2023 edition of the competition.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
