This will be her seventh involvement in the Solheim Cup, but who is Team USA captain Stacy Lewis?
Stacy Lewis will lead the American Solheim Cup squad at Finca Cortesin in September, but who is the Team USA captain?
Lewis has ticked off pretty much everything during her career. World No 1, major champion and Solheim Cup winner on two occasions.
The 38-year-old was announced captain of the US Solheim Cup team in February of last year.
“To be named captain for the USA Solheim Cup Team is an incredible honour and I’m beyond grateful to the Committee for choosing me,” Lewis said after she was announced as the skipper.
“I have so many amazing memories from my years on the team and the two opportunities I’ve had to work alongside the team. I absolutely love the Solheim Cup and I want 2023 to be as great an experience for my team as my years wearing Red, White and Blue have been for me.
“I have learned so much from the past captains on the Solheim Cup Committee, and the fact that they chose me to lead this team is one of the proudest moments of my career.
“Juli [Inkster] gave me my first taste of captaincy when she asked me to help her with the singles lineup in Germany in 2015. Being an assistant captain for Pat [Hurst] was honestly the most fun week I’ve had at a Solheim Cup. I’m more than ready to step into this role.”
Lewis has been involved in the Solheim Cup on six occasions, four times as a player. She made her debut in the competition in 2011 and played in four successive editions of the tournament.
The American would have then played in 2019 as well, but injury ruled her out. Instead, she was a Vice Captain, the same role she fulfilled two years later.
Lewis’ career in the individual game is just as high-profile. The American is a two-time major champion, with her first professional victory on the LPGA Tour coming in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
She became World No 1 a year later, before then winning a second major championship in 2013. Lewis was victorious at the Ricoh Women’s Open.
In total, Lewis has 13 LPGA Tour titles and 20 top-10 finishes in major championships.
Following the postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Solheim Cup will revert back to even-numbered years.
The Solheim Cup will be played for the second consecutive year in 2024, where Lewis will once again be captain, this time on home soil.
