Not another one! Korn Ferry star storms to sub-60 scorecard in Texas

Frankie Capan III toppled the previous course record set by Scottie Scheffler at Texas Rangers Golf Club with a stunning sub-60 round…

It was only two months ago when Cristobal Del Solar shot a 57 on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Now, Frankie Capan III has joined the exclusive club of players to shoot sub-60 rounds in a professional tournament. It is just the second time a player has recorded a 58 in competition on the Korn Ferry Tour.

The 24-year-old from Minnesota took 29 shots on each nine at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in the Veritex Bank Championship.

Capan III opened with four birdies in his first five holes and he added an eagle at the par-5 9th hole to turn in six-under-par.

He continued to make seven consecutive birdies and finished with the comfort of two pars, cruising to a round of 58 and 13-under-par. He was in a position where if he had eagled the par-5 18th hole, he’d have carded a 56.

Capan III has also broken the course record that had previously been set by World No.1 and two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in May, 2020.

“It was a lot of fun out there – after the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at. You know, I’ve been putting a lot of work in the last few weeks and really the last few months just trying to dial a few things in,” he said.

“I think it all kind of came together, which was nice today. And then whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could. I know this course might be gettable the next few days, so just tried to get as many as I could.

“Obviously shooting 58, the course record and all that, that’s cool. I can’t say enough, Rusty and I did a really good job of just kind of staying in the present moment. Yeah, like I said, a lot of fun, but we still have three more days.

“So just kind of taking a lot of positives from today, but taking those into this evening and tomorrow.”

Having only turned professional in 2022, Capan III is just 30 starts into his Korn Ferry Tour career and he is currently eligible only for coming in the top 75 of the last Korn Ferry Tour Points List.

He attended Florida Gulf Coast University and he has gone on to play in one major championship in his fledgling career so far when he missed the cut at the 2023 US Open in Los Angeles.

Capan III stole the thunder of fellow American Trent Phillips who shot a superb 61 of his own, a round that included three eagles and one of which was on a short par 4.

He is yet to win on the Korn Ferry Tour. He was closest to glory when coming tied for third at the HomeTown Lenders Championship last April.

In his high school years in Arizona, he valeted cars and remembers valeting the vehicles of Jon Rahm, Adam Hadwin and Arron Oberholser.
