Henrik Stenson is Sweden’s best ever male golfer, with a major championship among his 22 worldwide victories.

Born in Gothenburg in April 1976, it wasn’t until his teenage years that Stenson properly took up the game of golf. He would soon become an amateur star, winning the Italian Open Amateur Match Play at the age of 20, before turning professional in 1998.

The Swede started on the Challenge Tour, and won three times in 2000, including the season-ending Cuba Challenge Tour Grand Final, which saw him crowned as the tour’s Rankings Winner for the season. That would be a sign of things to come, as he would go on to become the first player to win the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai and the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup in the same year – doing so in 2013 after winning both the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai and the Tour Championship.

He made more history three years later, as he became the first Swedish male to win a major championship. That came at the 2016 Open Championship, where he got the better of Phil Mickelson at Royal Troon, after the pair had duelled it out for the last 36 holes, with both finishing more than ten shots clear of the next challenger.

Stenson has a total of 22 victories worldwide, including a World Golf Championships success, and victories in the flagship events of the PGA Tour – the Players Championship – and the Sunshine Tour – the SA Open Championship. On the international stage, he won the Omega Mission Hills World Cup in 2008 as well, alongside compatriot Robert Karlsson.

He has also been a part of five Ryder Cup teams, forming a formidable partnership with good friend Justin Rose throughout. Stenson has helped Team Europe to wins in 2006, 2014 and 2018, and was to be the captain of the 2023 edition. However, following his move to the LIV Golf League, the Swede was stripped of the captaincy, with Luke Donald taking over. Stenson then lost his place in the LIV Golf League at the end of 2025, finishing inside the Drop Zone and being relegated form the league.
