The Genesis Invitational usually visits Riviera Country Club, one of the best golf courses used on the PGA Tour schedule.

However, it was announced on January 16 that due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, the event couldn’t be held at Riviera and must move to an alternative venue. wo major blazes spread across Los Angeles having erupted on January 7 in the Palisades area where Riviera sits.

The South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, which recently hosted the Farmers Insurance Open, was named as the new host venue for the 2025 Genesis Invitational.

Tiger Woods hosts the event with his foundation and it has a touch of poignancy for the 15-time major champion, given it was where he made his PGA Tour debut in 1992. Woods was going to appear for the first time in competition since the death of his mother Kultida, but he withdrew three days before the event was due to start.

It was called the Nissan Los Angeles Open back then. Fred Couples won that week, but Woods has never tasted victory at the tournament his name is now plastered over.

Riviera has hosted this event for most of its history and has held it since 1999. Rancho Park Golf Course hosted the event 17 times.

Woods has used this event in recent years as an acid test for his battered body, in preparation for the Masters in April. Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama won the Genesis Invitational in 2024.

The tournament is one of the eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour schedule in 2025. As it is one of the three player-hosted events in the Signature schedule, there will be a cut after 36 holes.

Signature Events attract the best fields, so expect the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schaufele and Collin Morikawa to be lurking near the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy arrives after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am ad his fellow European Thoma Detry won the WM Phoenix Open by seven shots the week prior to Genesis week.

Los Angeles Fire Update

On January 7, fires began in Los Angeles. Powerful winds caused the wildfires to spread which has caused some of the most devastating scenes in California’s history.

The fires were fueled by drought conditions and Santa Ana winds. It was believed dozens of people died in the fires that spread through communities in the Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Altadena and Pasadena.

On January 10, the Genesis Invitational issued a statement:
