Who is Ludvig Aberg? Meet Europe’s newest star

He has no major championship experience, but he’s already shining bright on the Ryder Cup stage…

Golf’s newest superstar was playing in college earlier this year. Now he’s starring in the Ryder Cup, but who is Ludvig Aberg?

The Swede was still an amateur just three months before being selected as a captain’s pick by Luke Donald.

Aberg made history by becoming the first man to ever feature in the competition without having played in a major championship.

We’ve all seen the 23-year-old on our screens now, but who is Ludvig Aberg?

The sport’s newest rising star

Aberg has been destined for the bright lights in golf for some time, showing his qualities throughout his amateur career.

He spent a total of 29 weeks at the summit of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and only relinquished the top spot because he turned professional.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Aberg spent time back in Europe, winning twice on the Swedish Golf Tour. He was the victor at the Katrineholm Open and the Barseback Resort Masters.

Aberg also showed off his talent during his time at Texas Tech University. He won a TTU-record eight times, and he became the first golfer to win back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championship titles, doing so in 2022 and 2023.

He was the recipient of the Ben Hogan Award in both 2022 and 2023, becoming the first player since Jon Rahm to win the award twice.

Aberg then started to excel on the PGA Tour, with a string of top-25 finishes. That run included a T4 finish at the Jon Deere Classic.

In his attempts to make the European Ryder Cup team, the Swede came over to play on the DP World Tour. He succeeded in that quest, thanks to his maiden victory on the tour.

Aberg birdied four of his final five holes on Sunday afternoon to win the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland. Luke Donald was left with no choice, and selected the Swede as one of his six picks to play in Rome.

He showed no nerves in his opening match, paired alongside Viktor Hovland in the Friday morning foursomes.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
