Who is Luke Donald?
Luke Donald has had an incredible golfing career, topping both the PGA Tour and European Tour money lists and spending more than a year as the World No.1.
The Englishman’s professional career began with a win already under his belt, after he had won LaSalle Bank Chicago Open in 2000. He graduated from Northwestern University a year later with an Art Theory and Practice degree, and found himself on the PGA Tour in 2002.
Over the course of his professional career, Donald has won 17 times worldwide, including winning the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship in back-to-back years in 2011 and 2012. The Englishman has also won two World Golf Championships events. He won the World Cup alongside Paul Casey in 2004, before claiming the Accenture Match Play seven years later.
Donald made history that year, 2011. He became the first man to ever top the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season. Donald led the way on both the PGA Tour and European Tour money lists, going to World No.1 in the process.
Playing for Team Europe was another key part of Donald’s success as a golfer. He played in four Ryder Cups, making his debut in 2004. His last act as a player in the biennial team event was leading Europe out on Singles Sunday at Medinah, as the team fought back from 10-6 down to miraculously win 14.5-13.5. Donald was a winner with Europe in all four appearances in the competition, and he will captain a 12-man squad at Marco Simone in 2023 as the Europeans aim to win the Ryder Cup back.
