The PGA Tour’s flagship event was the brainchild of then-commissioner Dean Beman and inaugurated in 1974.
It originally moved between several courses before settling in its current home of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in 1982 – a course by architect Pete Dye is best known for its iconic island green 17th hole.
Generally known as The Players, the tournament is generally considered the strongest field in golf, so there’s a reason they call it the fifth major.
The winner’s list at this tournament would rival any major championship as well, so here is the full rundown of Players Championship winners…

Did you know?
The Players Championship title was never successfully defended until 2024 when Scottie Scheffler achieved the feat.
Jack Nicklaus came closest before this when he won his three titles in the first five years of the tournament’s existence – all on different courses – while of the five players to have won twice in the TPC Sawgrass era, the shortest span between victories was six years when Steve Elkington won in 1991 and 1997.
The best finish by a defending champion, before Scheffler came along, was tied for fifth – Nicklaus in 1977, Tom Kite in 1990, and Hal Sutton in 2001.
The closest any defending champion got to the eventual winner in terms of strokes is four – Nicklaus in 1977, Lee Trevino in 1981, Mark McCumber in 1989, and Adam Scott in 2005.
The defending champion has missed the cut on 10 occasions, most recently Rory McIlroy in 2021, and has not participated on three occasions – Jerry Pate in 1983, Elkington in 1998, and Tiger Woods in 2014.
