The second round of the Chevron Championship, like at any other huge event in golf, is extremely important. It can both make your week and break your week.
If you are at the top of the leaderboard, you need another solid showing to keep your foot on the gas and maintain a challenge heading into moving day – the term used to describe the third round of a tournament.
This can set you up with a late tee time on Saturday and more time in the morning to rest and recover. There is nothing more exciting for a professional golfer than to be in one of the final groups on the tee sheet at a major championship. It is what every golf fan and aspiring player dreams of.
There is also the other end of the leaderboard that always makes for intriguing viewing at golf tournaments. The players hovering around the cut line are under as much pressure as those at the top of the pile.
A bad first round can’t put you out of the tournament, but a bad second round literally can if you are unable to recover. Missing the cut at a major is even more frustrating as it is a chance to etch your name into folklore gone.
At the Chevron Championship in 2024, the likes of Megan Khang, Jin Young Ko, Patty Tavatanakit, Celine Boutier, Leona Maguire, Hannah Green, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson all missed the weekend.
They all shot in the 70s which can prove costly at major championships when many players are looking to go low and climb the leaderboard. You then had the winner Nelly Korda, runner-up Maja Stark, Haeran Ryu, Carlota Ciganda, Jin Hee Im, and Andrea Lee all broke 70 to progress among the pack.
It was Korda who was victorious in the end. She shot three consecutive cards of 69 in the final three rounds to win her second major championship.
