Who is Viktor Hovland’s caddie?

Viktor Hovland has had the same caddie since he turned professional, and this continuity has helped him to become one of the best players in the world

Shay Knight is the longtime caddie for Viktor Hovland, serving as his bag-carrier since Hovland turned professional in 2019.

Knight is an experienced Australian caddie from Sydney who had already logged over a decade of looper experience on the PGA Tour by the time he joined Hovland’s team.

The young Norwegian met Knight at the 2018 Mayakoba Golf Classic, but they only became an official pairing when Hovland turned pro after a super US college career.

Knight has previously revealed that the connection was made by fellow caddie Joe Skovron, who reached out to Knight as Hovland’s decision to turn pro became imminent. Their first competition together was at the 2019 Travelers Championship.

As of 2025, Hovland and Knight have worked together for a long while, as Hovland looks to find more success on the PGA Tour and to finally break through in the major championships.

Hovland won the Memorial Tournament in 2023, the BMW Championship and then the Tour Championship, which made him the FedEx Cup champion. In 2025, he also won the Valspar Championship.

Together, Hovland and Knight have played in every Ryder Cup since 2021. He has been a talismanic presence for Team Europe and has formed solid partnerships with the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Tyrrell Hatton and Bob MacIntyre.

Knight has previously worked with several top players on the PGA Tour, including Matt Jones, Martin Laird, Sean O’Hair, D.J. Trahan, Chez Reavie and Jerry Kelly.

Prior to his full-time teaming with Shay Knight, Hovland had at least one different person on the bag in the final phases of his amateur career.

While still in college at Oklahoma State University, Hovland’s coach Alan Bratton acted as his caddie during his successful run at the 2018 US Amateur, as well as early into his major amateur starts.

For example, Bratton was on the bag when Hovland broke the low-amateur scoring record at the 2019 US Open, where Bratton was listed as his caddie.

A stable player-caddie relationship can lead to a lot of success. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had the same caddie for extended periods of time, but Hovland’s European Ryder Cup teammates have also had long, prosperous relationships with their caddies, such as Tommy Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm.
